국문 초록

해외봉사활동은 대학생들에게 매우 인기 있지만 해외봉사활동과 관련한 연구들은 이 활동에 참여하는 대학생들의 경험을 세밀하게 이해하고, 해외봉사활동을 자원봉사관광(Volunteer Tourism)의 의미로 이해하는 데는 아직 이르지 못하고 있는 것이 현실이다. 이에 본 연구에서는 우즈베키스탄 단기 한국어 교육 봉사 프로그램에 참여한 대학생 5명을 연구 참여자로 선정했으며, 심층적인 면담을 통해 이들이 활동과정에서 인지한 자원봉사관광의 경험적 특징을 알아보았다. 귀납적인 범주분석 과정을 통해 도출된 주제들을 중주제, 대주제로 분석해 갔으며, 이렇게 분석된 내용을 혁신확산이론이 제시하는 혁신의 인지된 특징에 관한 논의와 통합해 연구결과를 도출했다. 연구결과, 봉사 주체인 대학생들은 자원봉사관광 프로그램 및 활동에 대해 상대적 이점, 적합성, 시험가능성, 관찰가능성을 대부분 높게 인지하고 있었다. 이는 자원봉사관광 참여와 실천을 촉진하는 요인으로 작용했다. 하지만 프로그램에 대한 부족한 이해나 활동의 어려움에 따라 복잡성을 인지하기도 했는데, 이는 해외 자원봉사관광실천의 방해요인이 된다는 점을 확인했다. 본 연구결과는 자원봉사관광에 참여한 대학생들의 경험을 세밀하게 이해하는 것은 물론, 발전적인 대학생 자원봉사관광 프로그램의 개발과 운영에 기여할 수 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

College students’ short-term international volunteering should be understood as volunteer tourism; however, they have been mostly studied with the perspective of traditional volunteerism. Researchers and college administrators should understand the different characteristics, wants and needs, and detail experience of student volunteers to enhance the quality of their experience. Thus, the purpose of the study is to explore student volunteers’ experience during an international volunteer tourism program. The in-depth interviews were conducted on five students who participated in the program focusing on Korean language education in Uzbekistan. The inductive categorization of the interview data was conducted. The categorized data was discussed based on the diffusion of innovation theory. According to the results, the study participants acknowledged the relative advantage, compatibility, trialability, and observability related to their volunteering experience well, which became the factors to promote the involvement in volunteer tourism. However, the lack of understanding regarding the program and the difficulty of volunteering caused the some level of complexity. The results of the study will be a beneficial asset to develop and manage international volunteer tourism programs for college students.
