眞德秀의 ‘心學’

국문 초록

이 글에서는 朱熹에서 비롯되어 蔡沈을 거쳐 眞德秀에 이르러 ‘心學’이라는 개념이 탄생하게 되는 과정에 대해 살펴보았다. 주희는 道統論을 주장하면서 그 경전적 근거로서 『書經』 「大禹謨」의 “人心惟危, 道心惟微, 惟精惟一, 允執厥中”을 제시하는 한편, 堯·舜·禹로부터 시작된 이와 같은 道의 傳授를 “心法의 전수” 또는 “傳心”이라고 해석하였다. 또한 주희의 명을 받아 『書集傳』을 완성한 채침은 스승의 傳心說을 계승하여 “二帝와 三王의 마음” 또는 “聖人의 마음”을 『서경』 전체를 해석하는 핵심 개념으로 발전시켰다. 이러한 흐름은 주희의 재전 제자인 진덕수에게도 이어져서 마침내 심학이라는 개념이 탄생되게 되었다. 진덕수는 본래 역대 성현들의 마음에 관한 논의를 이해하고 그것을 통해 자신의 마음을 수양하는 것이라는 의미로 심학이라는 용어를 사용하였으나, 「대우모」의 열여섯 글자를 “萬世 心學의 연원”으로 규정한 그의 말은 이후 유학의 역사에서 심학을 표현하는 전형적인 용법으로서 정착되게 된다. 이러한 점에서 본다면 심학이라는 개념은 주희, 채침, 진덕수를 거치면서 탄생된 것이었다고 말할 수 있다. “程朱理學”, “陸王心學”이라는 후대의 명칭과 그에서 비롯된 선입견과는 달리, 심학은 남송 말 주자학 내부의 전개 과정에서 탄생된 개념이었다고 할 수 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

This paper studies a process of the birth of Xinxue(心學), starting from Zhu Xi(朱熹), passing through Cai Shen(蔡沈), and reaching Zhen Dexiu(眞德秀). In insisting on the orthodox lineage of the way(道統), Zhu Xi cited the Sixteen-Character Dictum in the Book of Documents(書經), and defined it as the transmission of mind(傳心). Cai Shen, a student of Zhu Xi, succeeded teacher’s theory and developed the transmission of mind as a key concept for interpreting the Book of Documents. This flow was succeeded by Zhen Dexiu, and finally the concept of Xinxue was born. Originally, Zhen Dexiu used the term of Xinxue in the sense of understanding the discussion about the mind of ancient sages and cultivating the mind through it. But his words, “the Sixteen-Character Dictum that Shun (舜) attributed to Yu(禹) is the origin of eternal Xinxue”, have settled as a typical usage for expressing Xinxue in the history of Neo-Confucianism. From this point of view, it can be said that the concept of Xinxue was born through Zhu Xi, Cai Shen, and Zhen Dexiu, and unlike the prejudices derived from the name, Cheng Zhu lixue(程朱理學), Lu Wang xinxue(陸王心學), the names given to the later, Xinxue can be said a concept born in the process of Zhu xi school(朱子學) development inside, in the Southern Song.
