학교규모와 학급규모가 학생과 교사의 교육활동에 미치는 영향:

국문 초록

본 연구는 경기교육종단연구 2, 3차 자료를 사용해 극소규모로부터 과대규모에 이르기 까지 다양한 학교규모와 학급규모가 학생과 교사들의 교육활동에 미치는 영향을 분석하였다. 분석결과 첫째, 학급규모와 학교규모가 전체 학생들의 수업태도, 학습자중심 수업방법, 수업이해정도, 자기효능감에 미치는 영향은 거의 없었다. 둘째, 가구소득이 하위 25%인 저소득층 학생들은 규모가 큰 학교에서 수업태도가 부정적으로 나타났으며, 학습자 중심 수업방법에서도 규모가 큰 학교에서 부정적인 영향을 받는 것으로 나타났다. 학생수 64명 이하의 극소규모학교의 영향은 수업이해정도에서 저소득층 학생들이 미미한 수준으로(유의수준 .1 기준) 낮게 나타났을 뿐 달리 극소규모학교에 대한 우려가 실증적으로 입증되지 않았다. 셋째, 교사들의 교육활동에 미치는 학교규모의 영향력은 대규모학교의 경우 수업관련 교사 효능감, 생활지도 관련 교사효능감은 미미한 수준으로(유의수준 .1 기준) 낮았으며, 학습자중심 수업활동에서는 유의미한 수준으로 부정적으로 나타났다. 넷째, 교사들의 교육활동에 미치는 학급규모의 영향력을 살펴보면, 생활지도와 관련한 교사효능감이 학급규모가 20-25명인 경우 더 낮았으며, 교사의 사기와 열의는 학급당 학생수 20-25명인 경우 미미한 수준으로 낮게, 그러나 학생수가 25명을 초과하는 대규모 학급에서는 유의미한 수준으로 낮게 나타났다. 본 연구는 과대학교에서 저소득층의 교육활동을 적극적으로 지원할 필요가 있으며, 중장기적으로 과대학교와 과대학급의 규모를 지속적으로 낮추는 노력이 필요하다는 점을 강조했다.

영문 초록

This study analyzed the effects of school size and class size on the education of students and teachers using Kyeonggi Education Longitudinal Study Data. School and class sizes ranged from extremely small sizes to extremely large sizes. This study found that school and class sizes had no statistically significant impacts on class interest, student-centered class, the level of class understanding, and self-efficacy. However, large schools had negative impacts on class interest and student-centered class of students from the lower 25% income families. Extremely small schools with 64 or fewer students had a moderate impact on the level of class understanding of low income students at a significance level of .1. The concern for the education of extremely small schools was not proven empirically. This study found that large schools had a moderate negative impacts on teachers efficacy at a significance level of .1 and significantly negative impacts on student-centered teaching. Large classes with more than 25 students had negative impacts on teachers efficacy associated with student guidance and teachers confidence and enthusiasm. This study suggested that large schools should support learning of low-income students and that large schools and classes should be decreased to the optimal sizes for the medium and long term.
