琉球의 천재 화가 自了(城間淸豊)

국문 초록

이 논문은 중세 유구왕국의 천재화가라고 불리는 自了, 구스쿠마 세이호우(城間淸豊)를 입전한 『중산자료전』을 분석한 것이다. 화가 자료는 사족출신으로 유구 문헌이 전하는 한에서 유구 최초의 繪師이다. 따라서 「중산자료전」을 분석하는 것은 유구의 서화와 서화가에 대한 정보를 제공받을 수 있으며, 유구의 서화가 제도를 간략하나마 이해하고, 조선과의 비교학적 시각을 가질 수 있다. 또한 유구의 傳, 특히 藝人傳이 어떻게 구성되었는지도 동아시아 傳문학적 시각에서 一瞥할 수 있을 것이라 생각한다. 즉, 유구는 중세 동아시아의 한자문화권에 속했으며 조선과 마찬가지로 중국에 조공했던 독립국이었고, 조선과도 교류가 있었다. 그러나 유구 한문학에 대해 우리 학계에 알려진 것은 매우 열악하다. 그러므로 이 논문이 중세 동아시아 한문문학에 대한 이해와 지평을 넓힌다는 측면에서 약간의 기여를 할 것으로 생각한다. 「중산자료전」 은 자료 사후 44년이 되어 유구인이 아닌 중국인 陳元輔에 의해 입전되었다. 총8개의 일화를 제시하고 논평 앞에 세미논평형식으로 입전동기를 적고 있는데, 8개의 일화는 화가 자료의 출생부터 죽음까지 일대기적 서술형식으로 되어 있다. 즉, 선천적 聾啞로 태어났으나 스스로의 관찰력과 집중력 혹은 천재성으로 사물에 대한 이치를 깨달아 비범한 인간으로, 또 유구 최고의 화가로 성장하는 과정을 파노라마처럼 구성하고 있다. 그러나 藝人傳으로서 「중산자료전」은 입전인물의 예술적 비범성만을 표창하고 있을 따름이고, 입전인물의 예술적 고뇌나 예술가로서의 자의식은 전혀 그리고 있지 않다. 이런 점에서 조선후기 이전에 창작된 예인전과 유사하다. 특히 마지막 일화에서는 異人傳에서나 볼 수 있는 尸脫의 문제까지 거론하여 리얼리티를 떨어뜨리고 있다.

영문 초록

This study was designed to analyze 『Jungsan Jaryo Jeon』, a biography of Jaryo or Kuskuma Seihou who was an artistic genius of the Yugu kingdom in the medieval times. Painter Jaryo, a man of noble family, is Yugu’s first painter as long as publications of the kingdom state. Investigating 『Jungsan Jaryo Jeon』 may provide information about the calligraphic painting and painters of Yugu. It may also provide a brief understanding of calligraphic painters’ system of the kingdom in comparison to that of Joseon. Furthermore, the investigation may take a glimpse of how Yugu’s biographies, especially, those of artists are structured from the perspective of East Asian biographic literature. 『Jungsan Jaryo Jeon』 was written 44 years after Jaryo died. Its author is not a Yugu native, but a Chinese, Jin Won-bo. The biography largely consists of 8 anecdotes. It also includes the author’s comments ahead of which there are semi-comments regarding why he wrote 『Jungsan Jaryo Jeon』. The 8 anecdotes provide a panoramic description of Jaryo’s whole life from his birth to death. According to the description, Jaryo was born as a deaf, but grew up as an extraordinary person who realized the reason of things by using his own skills of observation and concentration or his own genius, and finally developed himself into the best painter of Yugu. As a biography of an artist, however, 『Jungsan Jaryo Jeon』 is just full of praise for how artistically extraordinary the main figure was, but never looks into how distressful or self-conscious he was as a artist. In this regard, 『Jungsan Jaryo Jeon』 is similar to other biographies of artists that were written before the late Joseon period. Especially, its last anecdote contributes to the less reality of the biography even by depicting an event of buried body disappearance or like that is at best sometimes found in the biographies of eccentric figures.
