국문 초록

본 논문은 교과서를 일종의 문화적 텍스트로 보면서, 고등학교 사회 교과서(지리 영역)에서 기술, 사회, 공 간의 관계가 어떤 모습으로 나타나는지를 탐구한다. 이를 위해 먼저 Donna Haraway의 사이보그 페미니즘과 Bruno Latour의 행위자-연결망 이론이 인간과 비인간, 문화(사회)와 자연, 사회와 기술 등의 존재론적 이분법 을 어떻게 비판하는지를 검토한다. 그리고 그와 관련하여 Stephen Graham이 제시한 정보통신기술과 공간(장 소)의 관계를 바라보는 세 가지 관점을 살펴본다. 그런 다음, 그와 같은 이론적 논의를 토대로 고등학교 사회 교 과서(지리 영역)에서 과학기술과 사회(공간)의 관계가 어떻게 나타나는지를 조사하여 네 가지 특징으로 제시한다. 특히 교과서 속에는 인간과 비인간, 사회와 기술 등의 존재론적 이분법에 기반을 둔 기술결정론적 관점과 혼종들 에 대한 두려움이 나타나고 있음을 강조한다. 마지막 결론에서는 그러한 존재론적 이분법에서 벗어나고 저항하 기 위해서는 Haraway가 제시한 ‘재현의 정치’가 아니라 ‘접합의 정치’를 실천할 필요가 있음을 제안한다.

영문 초록

This paper explores the ways in which the relations between technology, society and space appear in high school social studies (geography) textbooks, while seeing the textbooks as a kind of cultural texts. For this purpose, it first reviews how Donna Haraway’s cyborg feminism and Bruno Latour’s ANT (Actor-Network Theory) criticize ontological dichotomies such as humans and nonhumans, culture (society) and nature, and society and technology. In addition, it looks at Stephen Graham’s explanation of three perspectives on the relations between ICTs (Information and Communication Technologies) and space (place). Then, drawing on these theoretical discussions, it examines the relations between scientific technologies and society (space) in the textbooks, and suggests their four features. Especially, it underlines that there appear technological determinism and fear of hybrids in the textbooks, both of which are based on ontological dichotomies such as humans and nonhumans, and society and technology. Finally, it concludes by suggesting that we need to practice the politics of ‘articulation’ rather than ‘representation’ Haraway suggests, for escaping from and resisting such ontological dichotomies.
