국문 초록

본 연구는 다문화주의가 영국 역사교육 과정의 목표중 하나로서 남게 되는 과정과 그것이 교과서에서 실제 서술되고 있는 내용을 고찰하며, 더 나아가 교육현장에서 다문화주의의 이상과 실제의 간극을 분석하려는 시도이다. 이 글의 전반부에서는 정부주도의 영국사 위주의 역사교육과정 개편이 성공하지 못하고 다문화주의 교육이 현재 영국 역사교육의 중요한 위치를 차지하게 되는 과정이 분석되었다. 그러나 교육과정 안에 다문화주의가 주요 교육 목표로 남게 된 것이 실제 교육현장에서의 다문화주의의 승리를 의미하는 것은 아니었다. 교육과정개정과 관련된 역사전쟁이 거둔 성과는 다문화주의가 영국 교육목표로서 갖는 당위성의 확인이었으며, 교육과정에서의 다문화주의 교육은 실상 또 다른 목표의 영역에 속한 것이었다. 이 글의 후반부에서 보인 것처럼, 영국에서는 다문화주의가 교육목표들 중 하나로 확립되었음에도 불구하고, 전통적 역사서술의 잔재가 사라지지 않았다. 교과서 내 많은 부분에서 자국 및 서유럽의 세계 주도성, 정상성을 강조하면서 한편으로는 아시아, 블랙아프리카, 이슬람세계의 수동성, 비정상성을 부각하는 서술들이 여전히 발견된다. 또한 앵글로-색슨 외의 영국 내 인종, 여성, 소수 인종, 이민자 등이 가지는 역사적 중요성은 여전히 그 양과 질의 면에서 충분히 강조되지 못하고 있다. 이는 영국의 역사논쟁이 종결된 것이 아니라 그 논쟁의 장을 담론의 영역에서 현실의 영역으로 바꾸어 지속되고 있음을 보여주고 있다.

영문 초록

This study scrutinizes how multiculturalism has remained as one of main purposes in history education and how many multicultural factors history textbooks contain in their contents. It also analyzes the gap between multicultural ideal and its actual feature in the education field. The first half of this essay explains how the Conservative Party’s attempt to introduce history national curriculum which focused on the British history rather than world history, failed to accomplish the intended goal and how multicultural contents has lived through two history wars and even take a substantial part in the curriculum. However, the survival of multiculturalism in history education does not mean its predominance in the classroom. It was the value of multiculturalism and its appropriateness in history education, of which the outcomes of the history wars approved; the multicultural history education in the classroom is additional concern. As demonstrated in the latter half of this essay, despite the establishment of a multicultural teaching system as a main educational objective, the vestiges of traditional historical writings still remain in current history textbooks; in many parts of them, international relations are understood from the British perspective, disclosing passiveness and abnormality of Asian, Black African and the Islamic worlds. Historical importance of other ethnic groups besides the Anglo-Saxon race in the British Isles, women, ethnic minorities, immigrants is not fully emphasized in these textbooks. This shows that the history war has not come to a close yet but still continues, changing its battleground from the place of discourse to the education field.
