1990년대 이후 일본 초등 사회 교과서의 한국사 관련 내용 분석

국문 초록

이 글에서는 1991년 검정 교과서부터 2014년 검정본 교과서까지 일본 초등 사회 교과서 중 일본사 내용을 담고 있는 6학년 1학기 교과서를 분석 대상으로 삼아 한국사 관련 내용을 분석하고 있다. 일본 초등 사회 6학년 1학기 교과서 중 동경출판의 1991년판과 2010년판을 비교하는 방식과 교육출판의 1991년판, 1999년판, 2001년판, 2004년판, 2010년판, 2014년판 검정본을 시계열적으로 비교하는 방식을 통해 다면적인 분석을 시도하고 있다. 또한, 이러한 두 가지 분석을 임진전쟁, 조선통신사, 청일전쟁과 조선, 조선의 식민지화와 독립운동, 관동대지진, 강제동원, 국교 회복과 교류 등 7기의 주제로 나누어 그 변화의 추이를 살펴보고 있다. 두 출판사를 중심으로 살피되, 나머지 출판사들의 교과서도 가급적 분석에 포함시켜 해석하고 있다. 일본 초등 사회 교과서의 한국사 관련 내용에는 초등학생용이라는 분량의 제한에도 불구하고 오히려 전근대의 선진문화 전달자로서의 한국의 역할을 밝히고 한국에 대한 식민지배를 ‘성찰’하고 함께 미래로 나아가려는 노력이 담겨 있어 주목된다. 문제는 2010년을 기점으로 영토 문제를 끌어안기 시작하면서 한국사 관련 서술의 질이 후퇴하기 시작했다는 점이다. 지금 일본 초등 사회 교과서의 한국사 관련 내용 서술은 우호와 갈등의 경계선상에 서 있다. 과거 침략과 가해의 사실을 분명히 가르치고 미래의 동아시아와 세계 평화에 기여하기 위한 노력이 퇴조하고 있는 것이다. ‘좋은 이웃으로서 상호 이해에 기반한 역사 교육은 어떻게 이루어져야 하는 것일까.’ 일본의 초등 사회 교육에 새삼 환기하고픈 질문이다.

영문 초록

Among the Social study textbooks for Japanese Elementary schools, government-screened and published from 1991 through 2014, analyzed here are the textbooks for the 6th grade s first semester which contain depiction of the history of Japan. Inside these textbooks, there are references to the history of Korea as well, and in this article, those references are examined and analyzed in seven categories: The Japanese invasion of Joseon in the 1590s, the Joseon Tongshin-sa emissaries dispatched to Japan, the Qing-Japan war and the Joseon peninsula, the Joseon colonization and the Korean Liberation movements, the Korean massacre during the Kanta earthquake, forced mobilization of the Joseon people, and restoration of a diplomatic relationship between the two countries and subsequent exchanges. These textbooks are designed for elementary school students, and the overall volume of the Korean references is not that large to be sure, but those references nonetheless notably display a deliberate effort to clarify the role of the Korean peninsula in premodem East Asia as a carrier of advanced cultural elements, and also contain an introspective recollection of Japan s past occupation and colonial ruling of Korea, as well as a hope for the two countries to face the future together. The problem is that the overall quality of these references have been deteriorating since the year 2010, when the territorial issues began to be included in the textbooks. The Social study textbooks for the Japanese Elementary schools, and in particular the Korean references inside, are walking a fine line between fostering friendship or sowing the seeds for hatred. Previous efforts to educate the students with shameful deeds in the past such as invasion and offense, and by doing so invite future peace to East Asia and the world, is declining. What would be the most de sirable version of history education, in terms of benefitting the neighbors with mutual understanding? This would be a question quite valid to be throvvn to the Japanese educators, who are in need of a new way of thinking when it comes to social education.
