국문 초록

본 글은 5·18의 보편기억화를 위한 디딤돌의 하나로 평범한 개인의 시선에서 5·18의 기억을 되살리고 죽은 자와 살아남은 자 모두의 고통을 함께 나누고 공감하는 과정을 재구성하여 공감의 역사교육을 시도하고 있다. 먼저, 보편기억화의 모티브로서 홀로코스트의 보편기억화 과정을 살피고, 영화, 소설, 만화, 다큐멘터리, 사진 등 5·18을 기억하고 성찰하기 위해 만들어진 문화 매체를 활용하여 평범한 개인으로서의 ‘나’를 5·18의 기억 속 주인공과 동일시하며 공감하는 과정을 재현해보고자 한다. 이를 위해 각 장과 절을 동영상, 사진, 소설 등의 문화 매체를 활용한 장면들을 배치하고 장면마다 ‘나’를 주체로 한 5·18로의 여정의 의미를 되짚는 방식으로 구성하고자 한다. 이를 통해 한국 안에서 아직도 보편기억으로 자리 잡지 못하고 정치적 이해관계와 이념 갈등에 휘둘리고 있는 5·18이 한국은 물론 세계가 함께 아파하며 기억하고 다시는 일어나서는 안 되는 비극, 즉 보편기억이라고 하는 공감대를 넓혀가는 계기를 제공하고자 한다. 5·18의 역사를 민주화를 위한 고귀한 희생이라는 교과서적인 평가를 넘어 살아남은 자들의 고통이 계속되고 있는, 생생한 오늘의 역사로 받아들이며 오늘을 사는 주체로서의 ‘나’는 5·18의 역사와 어떻게 마주할 것인가를 성찰할 수 있도록 이끌고자 한다.

영문 초록

Proposed in this article is a very sympathetic approach to educating people of May 18th, which would only be possible when the it is remembered properly by all, and when it could be reevaluated from an individual perspective. As a historical trauma that is burnt in the minds of many people, the process of ‘acceptance’ of such memory should be examined. Then all the media that have so far concentrated on the theme ‘May 18th,’ in the form of various media such as movies, novels, animations, documentaries and photos, created and consumed by people who wanted to remember and commemorate May 18th should be analyzed as well. And finally, how one could and should identify oneself with individuals who actually lived through May 18th should be considered as an issue that might as well be contemplated upon too. In this article, all chapters and sub-chapters will include scenes of people’s efforts trying to remember May 18th through videos, photos and novels, in an attempt to recreate individual journeys of asking oneself the very meaning of May 18th. This study should provide yet another reminder that May 18th is still debated by parties divided politically and ideologically, and that it is yet to become a universally embraced historical incident of Korea that could be remembered, shared, and accepted as a tragedy that should not be allowed to repeat itself. Praising May 18th merely as a noble sacrifice for Korean democracy is an appraisal that belongs to textbooks. The injuries of people who were forced to live through it are still very much open, and not to mention more than real. It is history that is still not concluded. Me and my life, as part of this period, should be able to answer the question: how to face May 18th, and what should I do.
