하나의 서양미술사 개론서를 통한 미술사 교육에 대한 소고

국문 초록

본 연구는 미술사 및 미술 감상 교육에 있어 대표적인 저작인 E. H. 곰브리치의 The Story of Art 의 관점을 분석함으로써 곰브리치 저술의 성과와 한계를 알아보고 하나의 개론서를 통한 미술사 교육의 한계를 보완하기 위한 대안을 제시하는 데에 있다. 『The Story of Art』 의 관점을 분석한 결과, 문제 해결 과정으로 미술사를 서술하였고 지각적 선택과 도식화에 의한 재현을 강조하였으며, 정신분석, 상대주의, 역사주의를 비판하고 대안적 설명 방식을 제안하였다는 점을 주요한 특징으로 도출할 수 있었다. 곰브리치의 관점은 미술 감상이 인지적 과정의 산물이며 감상에 있어 맥락과 배경을 강조하고 다양한 학문분야와 통합하여 이해를 도모하는 등 미술 감상에 있어 새로운 장을 열었다는 데에 큰 의의가 있다. 그러나 도판 선정의 편향성, 인문학과 실증과학을 결합한 점, 도식, 재현 그리고 작가의 의도를 지나치게 강조한 점 등으로 인한 한계가 있으며 포스트모던 사회에 이르러 감상자 중심 교육의 강조와 함께 새로운 대안이 요구된다. 마지막으로 대안으로써 하나의 작품을 다른 관점으로 서술한 해석을 함께 제시하는 방안, 교육대상자의 삶과 연계시키는 방안, 미술사를 인지적으로만 전달하는 것이 아닌 비인지적 방법, 특히 실기와 결합하는 방안 등을 제시하였다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to analyze the characteristics, the implications, and the limitations of the perspective of E. H. Gombrich in The Story of Art, and suggest future directions for art education. The analyses in the present study found that the Gombrich’s perspective in The Story of Art described Art History as a problem-solving procedure, and emphasized representations by perceptual selection and schematization. It also criticized psychoanalysis, relativism and historicism, and provided an alternative perspective for interpretation. Gombrich’s work expanded the paradigm of art appreciation by focusing on cognitive process, context, background, and interdisciplinary collaborations. However, his perspective is also limited due to bias in selection of artwork, lack of distinction between the humanities and experimental science, and overemphasis in artist’s intention, schema, and representation. Together with appreciator-centered education brought by Post-modern society, a new perspective for future art education seems required. The present article suggested several future directions such as providing multiple interpretations from different perspectives at the same time, trying to connect to students’ lives, and combining art history with art practice.
