구인회 모더니즘의 동시대적 예술성과 미학적 정치성

국문 초록

본고는 기존의 문학사에서 이른바 ‘순수한 모더니즘’이라 호명되어 왔던 구인회 모더니즘의 동시대적 예술성과 미학적 정치성의 문제를 논의했다. 이른바 ‘순수한 모더니즘’ 혹은 현실과 무관한 예술적 자율성으로 평가된 구인회의 문학은 김기림, 이상, 정지용, 박태원 등 당대 구성원들의 회고를 통해 새롭게 재론될 필요가 있다. 회고를 통해 본다면, 구인회의 미학적 바탕에는 ‘초현실주의’에 대한 인식이 공통적으로 존재한다는 점이 확인된다. 그러나 보다 중요한 것은 초현실주의 자체의 수용여부가 아니라, 그들이 새로운 지성적이고 현대적인 조선문학의 기치를 추구했다는 점에 있다. 「날개」에 대해 최재서가 파악하지 못했던 이상의 ‘예술성’에 대한 발언이 바로 이와 관련된 것이다. 이상은 ‘이미그란트(immigrant)’와 ‘데포르마시옹(déformation)라는 용어를 통해 구인회의 미학적 방향성을 암시적으로 드러내었던 것이다. 흔히 구인회는 순수한 ‘기교’ 또는 특별한 목적성을 갖지 않는 비정치적 예술단체로 논의되어 왔다. 그러나 본고에서 살핀 바와 같이 『시와소설』에서 텍스트들은 모더니티의 세계로부터 이탈하는 예술가의 미학적 자기인식과 현실을 파국으로 인정하는 정치적 맥락을 가진다. 『시와 소설』에 수록된 「방란장주인 - 성군 중 하나」(박태원), 「유선애상」(정지용), 「제야」(김기림), 「가외가전」(이상)에서 드러나듯, 이들은 현실에 안정적으로 안주하지 않는 멜랑콜리적 인식을 통해 ‘자본’과 ‘전쟁(2차 세계대전)’으로 나타나는 ‘파국적 모더니티’에 대한 미학적 사유를 공유하고 있었다. 미학적이며 동시에 정치적일 이들의 텍스트들의 ‘공통적’ 인식은 합리적 모더니티에 안주하지 않는 ‘이미그란트’적 태도와 세계를 데포르마시옹(변용)하고 자신들의 알레고리적 이미지로 재구축하는 예술가의 자기 정체성의 문제와 직결되어 있다. 이는 구인회가 지향했던 예술가적 정체성의 문제가 모더니티의 세계와 대결하고 넘어서고자 하는 인식에 기반해 있음을 보여준다. 요컨대 구인회 구성원들의 공유점은 미학적일 때 비로소 정치적일 수 있는 예술가의 근본적 인식과 관련된 것으로 해석되어야 하는 것이다.

영문 초록

This paper addresses the contemporary artistry, as well as the aesthetical and political nature of Guinhoe(구인회)’s modernism which has been labeled as ‘pure modernism’ throughout the history of literature. Guinhoe’s literature, often viewed as ‘pure modernism’ or artistry free from realistic boundaries, needs to be reexamined through the retrospection of then members Kim, Gi-rim, Yi, Sang, Jeong, Ji-yong and Park, Tae-won among others. Through such review of their works, it is clear that surrealism is prevalent in the aesthetic basis of Guinhoe. However, what is more significant than their acceptance of surrealism is that they pursued new heights of intellectualness along with modern values of Chosun literature. This is evident in Choi, Jae-seo’s analysis of “Nalgae” in which he failed to fathom Yi Sang’s interpretation of artistry. Yi, Sang implicitly demonstrated Guinhoe’s aesthetic direction through the usage of words ‘immigrant’ and ‘déformation.’ Guinhoe has often been recognized for its genuine technique, or as a non political organization without a special cause. However, as exhibited in this paper, the contents of Shiwa Soseol(Poetry and Novel) portray the artists’ aesthetic tendency to break away from the real world while acknowledging the catastrophic reality all at the same time. As evident in “Bangranjang Jooin Seonggun jung Hana”(Park, Tae-won), “Yooseonaesang”(Jeong, Ji-yong), “Jeya”(Kim, Ki-rim) “Gaouegajeon”(Yi, Sang) in Shiwa Soseol, these writers commonly share the aesthetic reasoning in regards to ‘catastrophic modernity’ stemmed from their melancholic view of the world which are then portrayed as ‘capital’ and ‘war’(World War II) in their works. Their aesthetic and political works commonly share the stance of an ‘immigrant’ who is not content with rational modernity. The works are also closely related to an artist’s self-awareness which ‘deforms’ the real world into a unique allegorical image. This demonstrates that Guinhoe’s artistic goal is based on their effort to clash with the world of modernity and go beyond its borders. In conclusion, Guinhoe’s works commonly share an artist’s fundamental viewpoint which allows the coexistence of aesthetic essence alongside their political nature.
