국문 초록

이 글은 김유경의 『청춘연가』와 장해성의 『두만강』을 통해 난민 여성이 어떻게 유동하는지, 그녀들의 몸이 어떻게 자본주의 교환 구조 속에 놓이게 되는지, 그 교환 구조에 대해 고찰하고, 나아가 난민 여성의 수난이 신자유주의 아래 경제적 난민으로 전락해 가는 모든 개인들의 문제와 연동하고 있음을 밝히는 것을 목적으로 한다. 두 소설 모두 주인공 여성은 ‘가장(아버지)의 몰락-장마당에서 호구 해결-인신매매와 탈북-정착의 실패(혹은 탈북의 실패)’라는 과정을 겪는다. 두 작품은 여성이 자본주의에 노출되는 과정과 그 결과 인신매매를 당하기 까지, 즉 상품 화폐의 교환 구조 속에 자신의 ‘몸’을 ‘상품’으로 내놓기까지의 과정을 보여준다. 북한의 어떠한 재화보다 세계 자본 체제에 태환성(兌換性, convertibility)을 가지는 것은 북한 여성의 ‘몸’이다. 여기서 탈북 여성의 탈출기는 이중의 의미에서 ‘목숨을 건 도약’이 된다. 하나는 실제 목숨을 건 탈출이며, 다른 하나는 ‘화폐’로 교환되는 ‘상품’으로서의 ‘몸’이다. 두 소설은 남한 정착에 실패하는 여성 인물을 통해 순결 이데올로기나 ‘국민 되기’ 서사를 그려내지만, 서사의 이면에서 공통적으로 드러나는 것은 교환 구조에 내몰린 여성이 교환을 중지했을 때 맞이하는 파국이다. 그리하여 『두만강』의 ‘혜영’, 『청춘연가』의 ‘선화’는 죽음에 이른다. 한편, 『청춘연가』의 경옥은 남한 도착 후 합법적 매매춘을 위해 다시 일본으로 월경한다. 경옥의 서사는 남한 사회에 진입한 탈북자들이 ‘경제적 난민’으로 재난민화되는 과정이다. 세계 체제로 확대된 ‘M-C-M’의 상품화폐 교환의 장에서 상품으로 전락한 인간은 끊임없이 ‘목숨을 건 도약’을 통해 교환 체계에서 밀려나지 않도록 하거나, 혹은 교환의 순환 고리를 단절함으로써 죽음에 이르는 수밖에 없다. 이 지점에서 탈북 여성의 문제가 비단 그들의 문제만이 아니라는 것이 드러난다.

영문 초록

This study analyzes novels on North Korean defectors’ exodus process and settlement in South Korea. Since the mid-1990s, novels which describe them or directly written by themselves based on their experiences have often appeared in the literary world of South Korea, along with rapid increase of the number of them. From these novels, the process in which heroines from North Korea undergo sufferings such as human traffic and prostitution, and then are immigrated into Korea via China, is commonly found. The narrative of escape from North Korea primarily shows stories of heroines because their ‘bodies’ have convertibility in the structure of capitalism. North Korean women defectors cross the border by placing their ‘bodies’ at the position of product in the ‘M (money)-C (commodity)-M (money)’ structure of capitalism. This is not only real life-risking escape, but also desperate exchanges of bodies regarded as ‘commodity’. In the novels, they are sold to China through human traffic and prostitution conducted in ‘Jangmadang’, a space for exchange between commodity and money. However, North Korean women defectors are again involved in human traffic or face death suddenly. Thus, they often fail to achieve successful ‘settlement’ in South Korean even after immigration. From such an impossibility of the settlement, it is thought that stop of exchange means the death in the ‘M-C-M’ structure. They should continuously take part in the exchange or they face the death if they quit it. Their narratives cannot be regarded as mere stories of a specific group, since their sufferings show the process in which global capitalism system commodity women’s bodies. Moreover, failures of their settlement exhibit the process in which political refugees become economic ones. Thus, the narrative of escape of North Korean may represent an aspect of economic minority mass-produced by global capital.
