국문 초록

千寬宇의 조선시대 연구는 後期를 중심으로 진행되었는데, 시기에 따라서 세 단계 정도로 나누어서 살필 수 있다. 첫 번째 단계는 1953년 이전까지의 시기, 두 번째 단계는 1954년부터 1960년대 후반까지의 시기, 세 번째 단계는 1960년대 후반 이후의 시기인데, 이렇게 살펴보면 그가 조선시대를 바라보는 시각이 변화하고 있었음을 알 수 있다. 첫 번째 시기에서 천관우는 조선 후기의 역사와 근대의 관련성을 찾으려는 시각으로 연구하였고, 그 과정에서 유형원은 근대정신의 內在的 胚盤의 역할을 담당한 ‘실학’을 체계화한 인물로 규정되었다. 두 번째 시기에서 천관우는 첫 번째 시기와 달리 조선 후기의 ‘실학’과 근대와의 관련성에 대해 별다른 언급을 드러내지 않았다. 따라서 이 시기의 글에서 유형원과 홍대용의 사상 및 학문은 유학의 차원에서 이해되는 경향이 짙었다. 이런 인식상의 변화는 조선 후기의 역사와 근대를 연결해서 이해하려는 연구 시각이 아직 학계 내에 보편화되지 못하였기 때문이기도 하고, 천관우가 제시한 ‘실학’의 개념과 성격에 대해서 학문적인 비판이 제기되었기 때문이다. 세 번째 시기에서 천관우는 ‘민족의식’과 ‘근대지향의식’이라는 용어로써 ‘실학’에 대한 새로운 개념을 제시하면서 다시금 조선 후기의 역사와 근대의 관련성을 탐구하는 시각을 회복하였다. 여기에는 60년대 이후 본격화한 민족주의의 고조와 내재적 발전론의 학문적 담론이 영향을 미쳤을 뿐 아니라, ‘실학’의 개념이 모호하다는 비판에 대해 학문적으로 대응하려던 천관우 자신의 문제의식이 크게 작용하였다고 보인다. 따라서 이러한 변화는 단순히 첫 번째 시기의 시각으로 되돌아간 것이 아니라 한 단계 진전된 학문적 모색이었다고 하겠다.

영문 초록

Cheon Kwanwu’s studies on the Joseon Dynasty was conducted around the late of that period, and showed a change in historical perception at about three stages. Before 1953, is the first stage, the second stage is from 1954 until the late 1960s, as since the late 1960s to the third stage, In the first stage, Cheon Kwanwu studied the history of the late Joseon Dynasty, especially its relevance to modern history, and in the process, Yuhyeongwon was defined as a figure systematized the ‘Silhak’. In the second stage, Cheon Kwanwu did not show any comments about connection between modern history and ‘Silhak’ of the late Joseon Dynasty. Thus, the ideas and thoughts of Yuhyeongwon and Hongdaeyong were understood at the level of Confucianism. The change in perception is due to the fact that the perspective the history of the late Joseon Dynasty had connection with the modern history has not yet been generalized in academia. It was also due to that scholarly criticism was suggested on the concept of ‘Silhak’ presented by Cheon Kwanwu. In the third stage, Cheon Kwanwu, presented new concept on ‘Silhak’ as the term ‘national consciousness’ and ‘modern-oriented consciousness’ and restored the perspective that find the connections between the late Joseon Dynasty and modern history. This was not only influenced by the effects of nationalism after the 1960s, but also influenced by his own critical mind to answer some criticism on concept of ‘Silhak’. Hence, this change is not merely a throwback to the perspective of the first stage, but rather a step forward.
