국문 초록

후석 천관우(後石 千寬宇, 1925~1991)는 1950~1970년대 신문 칼럼니스트로 명성을 날리고 언론자유 수호와 정치 민주화를 위해 헌신했던 언론인이자 한국사 연구에 매진했던 역사학자였다. 언론인으로서의 천관우의 행적은 거의 모두 알려져 있다. 중요한 점은 그것을 어떻게 해석하는가, 어떠한 관점에서 바라볼 것인가의 문제다. 이 글은 언론인 천관우를 좀더 깊이 있게 이해하기 위해 역사ㆍ글쓰기ㆍ독자라는 세 가지 관점을 제시하고 논의를 전개했다. 우선, 촉망받는 역사학도였던 천관우가 왜 기자가 되었는지를 살폈다. 천관우는 6ㆍ25 전쟁기에 피란수도 부산에서 기자가 되었다. 이를 두고 우연이라고 보는 견해도 있지만, 우연이 아니라고 보는 것이 타당하다. 천관우는 장지연ㆍ박은식ㆍ신채호ㆍ안재홍 등 민족주의 사학자 겸 언론인을 선망하면서 역사학에 입문했다. 이 과정을 통해 신문은 현재의 역사라는 인식을 갖춰 나갔다. 이런 인식이 그를 기자라는 직접으로 이끈 것이다. 천관우는 결국 역사학도였기 때문에 기자가 될 수 있었다고 보아야 한다. 이러한 인식을 토대로 천관우는 언론자유 수호와 민주화 운동에 매진했다. 또한 역사에 대한 식견과 통찰로 끊임없이 신문칼럼을 집필했다. 칼럼을 통해 천관우는 신문 글쓰기의 새로운 방향을 제시했다. 또한 신문 독자와 역사를 공유했고 미래를 함께 고민했다. 그가 신문 칼럼을 정착시킨 것도 역사인식이 있었기에 가능했다. 역사와 신문을 동일시했던 천관우는 동시대의 사람들, 독자들과의 소통을 늘 고민했다. 그것이 역사학 연구의 바람직한 방향이고 신문의 가치이자 효용이라고 생각했기 때문이다. 천관우는 이러한 관점을 신문의 에디토리얼 지면 활성화와 한국사 대중화로 구현했다. 한국사 대중화는 그가 지속적으로 해온 칼럼 쓰기와도 상통한다. 한국사 대중화에 있어 신문은 가장 효과적인 매체이기도 했다. 언론인 천관우에게 역사-글쓰기-독자(대중)의 세 가지 측면은 서로 긴밀하게 연결되어 있었다. 이들은 신문이라는 마당을 통해 한 곳에서 만났고, 현실 속으로 나아가 새로운 힘을 만들어내기도 했다. 이 가운데 가장 중요한 관점은 역사였다. 천관우에게 역사와 신문은 하나였다. 그가 언론인으로 글을 쓰고 활동을 하든, 역사가로서 역사를 연구하고 집필을 하던 그에게 언론은 역사였고 역사 또한 언론이었다. 역사-글쓰기-독자(대중)의 관점으로 볼 때, 천관우는 자신의 역사학적 관점을 끝까지 일관되게 지키면서 그것을 신문이라는 매체를 통해 구체적으로 구현해냈음을 확인할 수 있었다. 이러한 관점을 제시했다는 점에 이 글의 의의를 두고자 한다.

영문 초록

Cheon Kwanwu(1925~1991) was a journalist who had a reputation as a newspaper columnist in the 1950s and 70s, devoted himself to the defense of the press freedom and political democracy, and was a historian who devoted himself to the study of Korean history. Almost all of Cheon Kwanwu’s records as a journalist is known. The important point is how to interpret it and from what point of view. This article presents three perspectives, “History”, “Writing”, and “Reader” in order to deepen the understanding of the journalist Cheon Kwanwu. First, I looked at why Cheon Kwanwu, a well-known historian, became a reporter. Cheon Kwanwu became a reporter in Busan during the Korean War. There is a view that this is a coincidence, but it is reasonable to consider it is not a coincidence. Cheon Kwanwu started studying Korean History as he envied nationalist historians and journalists such as Jang Ji Yeon, Park Eun Sik, Shin Chae Ho, and An Jae Hong. Through this process, he has become aware of “newspaper is the current history.” This awareness led him directly to the reporter. It should be said that Cheon Kwanwu was a journalist because he was a historian. Based on this recognition, Cheon Kwanwu has been committed to the freedom of speech and democratization movement. In addition, he constantly wrote newspaper columns with knowledge of history and insights into history. Through the column, he proposed a new direction for newspaper writing. He also shared history with the readers of the newspaper and he worried about the future together. The fact that he settled in the newspaper column was possible because of the historical awareness. Having identified the history and the newspaper, Cheon Kwanwu has always contemplated communicating with contemporary people and readers. This is because it is the desirable direction of historical studies and the value and usefulness of newspapers. This viewpoint was implemented in the newspapers’ editorial pages and popularization of Korean history. Popularization of Korean history is also consistent with the column writing he has been doing continuously. Newspapers were also the most effective media in popularizing Korean history. The three aspects of History - Writing - Reader(Public) were closely linked to the journalist Cheon Kwanwu. They met in one place through the yard of the newspaper and went on to create new strengths. The most important aspect of these was history. For Cheon Kwanwu, history and newspapers were one. Whether he wrote or worked as a journalist, or studied history as a historian and wrote it, the press was history and history was also the press. From the viewpoint of History - Writing - Reader (Public), I could confirm that Cheon Kwanwu has consistently embraced his historical point of view and embodied it through the medium of newspapers. I would like to point out the significance of this article in suggesting such a point of view.
