보편사 서술의 세속화 과정

국문 초록

본 연구의 목적은 17세기 말에서 18세기 초에 이루어진 나타난 보편사 서술의 세속화라는 맥락 안에서 중국 문명에 대한 비코의 서술 태도를 분석하는 것이다. 16세기부터 유럽에 전해지기 시작한 중국 고대 문명에 대한 정보들은 전통적인 보편사 서술의 도식에 변화를 야기한 가장 중요한 원인이었다. 예수회 선교사들의 저작은 고대 중국에 유대-그리스도교 문명보다 더 이른 시기에 고도로 발달된 문명이 존재했다는 내용을 포함하고 있었고 이에 따라 당대의 호교론자들은 중국 문명의 발전상을 부정함으로써 전통적인 보편사의 기준이 되었던 성사(聖史, storia sacra)의 고대성과 문화적 우월성을 수호하려 했다. 『새로운 과학』에 나타나는 중국 문명에 대한 진술은 모순적이다. 비코는 당대의 호교론자들과 마찬가지로 성서의 진술이 갖는 역사적 사실성을 옹호하며 중국 문명의 고대성과 발전상을 반박했지만, 이와 달리 『새로운 과학』의 결론에서 중국 문명은 유대-그리스도교의 틀 밖에서 형성된 고도로 발달된 문명으로 묘사된다. 본 연구는 중국 문명과 관련된 비코의 모순적인 서술 태도를 비코의 보편사가 갖는 이단적이고 혁신적인 성격과의 연관을 통해 설명한다.

영문 초록

This study aims to analyse the historical reconstruction of Chinese civilization, which appeared in the New Science by the 18th-century Neapolitan philosopher Giambattista Vico. European contact with Chinese civilization caused some radical changes in the traditional historiography of universal history. Concrete information on Chinese civilization was delivered to European scholars by means of Jesuit missionaries’ works from the end of the 16th-century. These works contained, in particular, the thesis according to which Chinese people constructed a highly developed civilization in the period prior to the Judeo-Christian civilization of Europe. This thesis brought a crisis of the antiquity and superiority of the sacred history, which was a benchmark of historia salutis, the Christian conception of history. Vico’s attitude to Chinese civilization is ambivalent and ambiguous. The Neapolitan philosopher tried to defend the spatial and temporal frame of the historia salutis, not only denying the antiquity of Chinese civilization, but also emphasizing its barbarous and primitive properties. In the conclusion of New Science, however, a contradictory statement of the development achieved by Chinese people appeared. So far, any scholars who have dealt with Vico’s conception of universal history have not suggested a clear explanation for this contradictory issue. In this study, I will try to explain it in connection with the innovative aspects of Vico’s reconstruction of history.
