창강 김택영의 여성담론 연구

국문 초록

이 글은 19세기말, 20세기초를 대표하는 문인인 창강(滄江) 김택영(金澤榮, 1850~1927)이 여성 인물이나 여성 문제에 대해 남긴 글들을 중심으로 여성담론의 성격을 살핀 것이다. 창강은 열녀전뿐만 아니라 행장(行狀, haeng-jang), 논설 등에서 여성의 삶, 여성 기록, 정절, 여성교육, 여성노동에 대해 자신의 생각을 밝혔다. 이 글에서는 창강이 남긴 글들을 중심으로 그의 여성담론이 갖는 다양한 측면을 제시하고 그 의미를 해석하기 위해 창강이 남긴 여성관련 글들을 여성기록, 열절에 대한 논의, 여성노동에 대한 논의로 범주화하여 그 내용과 의미를 분석하였다. 창강은 열절에 대해, 따라죽는 관행을 비판하고 살아서 수절하는 것의 고통을 이해하지만 수절 자체를 부정하지는 않는다는 점에서 보수적인 면모를 보인다. 그러나 여성교육의 필요성을 강조하고, 여성교육의 기회를 확대하기 위해서는 지나치게 많은 여성의 노동을 덜어주는, 풍속과 사회구조의 변화가 있어야 한다고 지적한다. 창강의 이러만 면모는 유교 지식인 내부에서 일어난 여성인식의 변화를 보여준다는 점에서 중요한 의미를 갖는다. 창강이 보여주는 이러한 변화는 그의 경제관, 중국 체험, 이념보다는 현실을 중시하는 태도와 관련이 있을 것으로 생각된다.

영문 초록

This study tries to examine discourses on women which were written by Chang-gang(滄江) Kim Taek-young(金澤榮, 1850~1927), a confucian scholar from late 19th century to early 20th century. Chang-gang’s thoughts on women’s lives, chastity and the labors and education of women are found not only in the biographies of exemplary virtuous women but also in records of deceased persons’ lives and other writings. In order to analyse and interpret the meaning of these documents, I put them into three categories such as opinion on women’s lives, opinion on chastity, and opinion on female labors. Through this analysis I found that Chang-gang had both conservative thoughts and new perspective on women’s lives. He was conservative in that he did not deny the importance of keeping chastity in women’s lives, although with understanding of the pain in the lives of women who were forced to stick to their chastity after their husbands died, he criticized that custom which suppressed women’s sexuality and idealized women’s decision of dying following their husbands. But unlike other contemporary confucian scholars, he expressed the idea that women needed to be educated and that customs and structures of their society needed to be changed in order to relieve women of overloaded lives of labors. This kind of new idea which seemed to be derived from his staying in China suggests that there appeared some changes of thoughts on women among Confucian scholars.
