심재(深齋) 조긍섭(曺兢燮)의 여성 인식 연구

국문 초록

본고는 한말 유학자 심재(深齋) 조긍섭(曺兢燮, 1873~1933))이 남긴 문집 자료(『암서집(巖棲集)』, 『심재선생문집(深齋先生文集)』)를 대상으로, 근대 전환기 지식인의 현실 인식과 여성 인식에 대해 파악하고자 했다. 이는 개화파와 신학문이 중심을 이루었던 근대 연구의 지평을 넓히는 동시에 당대 여성인식의 다양한 스펙트럼을 이해하는 계기가 될 수 있다. 심재는 신학과 신문물 수용이 국가를 위태롭게 한 요인이라 보고 혼란한 시대에 도를 지키기 위해서는 은거하여 심신을 수양하며 후학을 양성하는 것이 최선이라 판단했다. 그에게 세상을 바로 세우는 유일한 방법은 성리학적 도리를 지키는 것이었다. 심재의 여성 인식은 딸과 아내, 어머니로서의 여성이 조금씩 달리 나타난다. 심재는 세상을 바로 세울 도리를 효와 열, 의리를 행한 전범적 여성에게서 찾았지만, 새로운 시대적 흐름은 이상적이고 도덕적 여성의 전범을 받아들이기 쉽지 않음을 잘 알았다. 그리하여 전범적 행위의 실천이 얼마나 어려운 일인지 부각해 언급하고 있다. 어려운 시대를 헤쳐 나갈 현실적인 문제 해결의 중요성 역시 잘 인식하고 있었기에, 가장인 여성의 경제활동과 이를 가능하게 하는 덕목도 부분적으로 인정하고 있었다. 한말 근대 전환기 유학자로서 심재는 나름의 현실 인식을 지니고 여성을 형상화하여 유학자로서의 소임을 다하기 위해 노력했다고 평가된다.

영문 초록

This paper aims to recognize the perception of women and the contemporary Age of Simjae(深齋) Jo, GeungSup(曺兢燮, 1873~1933), the Confucian scholars in the modern transitional period. This can serve as an opportunity to widen the horizon of modern research and understand the various spectrum of female perception of the age. Simjae regarded the modern sciences and new culture as a factor in the national crisis, and judged that it was best to retire and train oneself and nurture people in the chaotic era. The only way to restore the world to him was to obey the Sung Confucian justice. Simjae’s female perception is slightly different from the daughter, the wife, and the mother as the woman. Simjae found the reason to set the world upright in the model women who practice the filial piety, Yoel(烈) and loyalty, but he was well aware that people of new age would not readily accept the ideal and moral model of women. Thus, he reveals how difficult it is to practice the exemplary behavior. He was also aware of the importance of solving realistic problems that could overcome difficult times, and partially admitted the virtue for economic activity and appreciated the part of the woman s economic activity. Simjae had embodied the women with his own real sense of reality, and he tried to fulfill his duties as a Confucian scholar.
