이 글은 라캉이 󰡔안티고네󰡕 해석에서 강조하는 안티고네의 아름다움에 주목하여 관객이 경험하는 카타르시스의 윤리적 차원을 규명한다. 라캉은 안티고네의 이미지를 텅 빈 실린더의 표면에 나타나는 왜상에 비유하며, 이 이미지가 실재의 공백과의 관계를 통해 순화된다고 해석한다. 안티고네의 아름다운 이미지가 아테(Até)를 넘어 무대 뒤로 사라지는 지점에서 욕망은 분열된다. 안티고네의 욕망은 한계를 넘어 실재와 주이상스로 향하지만, 관객의 욕망은 안티고네의 아름다운 광채의 눈멀게 하는 효과를 통해 실재의 심연으로부터 거리를 두고 공포와 연민의 감정으로부터 정화된다. 윤리의 주체로서의 안티고네는 실재/주이상스의 윤리를 예증하지만, 안티고네가 대상으로 등장하는 연극 󰡔안티고네󰡕는 관객이 실재/주이상스로부터 적절한 거리를 찾는 욕망의 윤리를 예증한다. 라캉은 한편으로 욕망에 따라 행동했는가를 기준으로 영웅과 일반인을 구분하지만, 다른 한편으로 이 구분을 엄격히 유지하지 않으며 일반인도 정신분석적 윤리의 주체가 될 수 있다고 말한다. 그는 관객에 미치는 영감의 효과에 대한 플라톤의 논의를 언급하여 욕망의 실현 뿐 아니라 욕망의 정화에도 윤리적 차원이 존재함을 암시한다.

영문 초록

This essay explores tragic catharsis as a dimension of the Lacanian ethics of psychoanalysis. Analogizing the Theban tragedy that displays Antigone’s splendid image to an anamorphosis spread out on the surface of a cylinder whose center is empty, Jacques Lacan suggests that Antigone’s image is purified from its imaginary aspect by its linkage with the void of the real. Antigone’s beautiful image, however, is not simply a spectacular passage to the real. At the limit where she transgresses Até and disappears behind the stage, Antigone protects the spectators from the abysmal real through the blinding effect of her dazzling splendor. While Antigone’s desire continues to go beyond the limit, the spectators’ desire rebounds from it, purged from the emotional grip of glimpsing the fateful consequences of her transgression. As the transgressive subject, Antigone the heroine illustrates the ethics of the real. Antigone, the play in which she appears as the object of cathartic experience, exemplifies the ethics of desire because the audience can share the intensity of heroic transgression without being destroyed by its catastrophic consequences, thereby maintaining their desire at a proper distance from the play and its heroine. On the one hand, Lacan differentiates a hero who realizes his desire from an ordinary man who betrays or compromises it, privileging the former as ethical subject. On the other hand, however, he blurs this difference with the suggestion that there is an ethical dimension in the purification of desire as well as in the realization of it, in the spectators as well as in the hero.
