중국 百色분지의 구석기 유물군 성격에 대하여

국문 초록

본고는 중국 广西壯族自治區에 위치하는 百色분지의 유적과 구석기 유물군의 성격을 고찰 하고자 하며, 이를 통해 동아시아 주먹도끼의 의미를 되짚어 보고자 한다. 百色분지는 홍적세 이래 다양한 지질학적 과정을 겪으면서 右江 주변의 다단계 단구면으로 발전해 왔다. 구석기 유물은 대부분 네번째 단구면의 紅土 퇴적층에서 발견되었으며, 주먹도끼를 필두로 하는 아슐리안 공작과 유사한 양상을 보여준다. 이러한 유물군의 연대는 퇴적층에서 발견된 유리 운석의 절대 연대에 의존해서 중기 홍적세 초반(0.75~0.85 Mya)으로 인식되고 있지만, 보다 정밀한 조사를 통해서 이 일대의 지질사 및 유적 형성 과정에 대한 적절한 복원이 이루어질 필요가 있다. 百色분지의 주먹도끼 및 한국 임진-한탄강 유역 주먹 도끼에 대한 성격은 그 동안 아슐리안이나 모비우스 선과도 같은 개념적 범주를 통해서 인식이 되어 왔지만 동아시아 구석기의 다양성을 인정하고 이러한 다양성의 일면으로서 주먹도끼의 의미에 대한 새로운 고찰이 요구된다.

영문 초록

This article suggests significance of East Asian handaxe to be discussed in a critical context and surveys the Bose Basin of southern China and its palaeolithic assemblages as an example. The Bose Basin, located at the Guangxi Autonomous County, was formed in the course of various Pleistocene geological processes and developed multistepped river terraces near the Youjiang River; Acheulian-like palaeolithic artifacts are discovered within and around the laterite sediment of the T4 terrace. The age of lithic assemblages is, albeit arguable, estimated ca 0.75-0.85 Mya based on the date of tektites discovered within the laterite layer; future research for the reconstruction of site formation process in a more reliable way are necessary though. The nature and characteristic of handaxe from the Bose Basin and the IHRA, Korea, have been hitherto discussed via such western conceptual categories as Acheulian and Movius Line. It would be, however, appropriate to understand East Asian handaxe per se in the context of diversity: the significance of East Asian handaxe will be elucidated by accepting the diverse nature of East Asian palaeolithic.
