국문 초록

방화범죄는 짧은 시간에 대규모 인명피해와 재산손실을 초래한다. 그래서 다른 강력범죄보다 더 심각하다. 특성상 방화범죄는 상습적, 연쇄적으로 저질러지는 경향이다. 방화범죄를 억제하기 위해서는 효율적 수사활동이 긴요시 된다. 범행현장을 중심으로 방화범의 심리적, 행동특성 및 이동특성을 잘 파악하면, 범인을 신속하게 검거할 수 있다. 또한 방화범의 주거지(home)와 범행현장(crime scene)간의 이동거리를 밝혀내는 지리적 프로파일링 기법이 연쇄방화범에 적용될 수 있다. 연쇄방화범을 대상으로 프로파일링을 하는 경우, 범행동기 파악이 우선되어야 한다. 범행동기에 따라 행동특성 및 이동거리와 같은 요소들이 상이하다. 방화범들의 범행 후 특이한 행동경향은 방화현장을 중심으로 이루어지는 수사활동에 매우 유용한 단서들을 제공하고 있다. 방화범이 자신에게 친숙한(acquainted) 공간, 즉 주거지와 인접한 장소에서 방화를 저지르는 경향을 보이고 있으며, 범행현장까지 걸어서 혹은 자전거를 타고 접근하고 있다. 본연구에서는 한국, 미국, 호주의 선행연구결과들이 활용되었다.

영문 초록

In our modern society, arson tends to cause a great loss of life and property. It is regarded as a more serious crime than other violent crimes. Generally, arsonist repeatedly commit their offenses. It is very necessary to prevent and deter arson through the effective investigative activity and skill. If we understand the serial arsonist s behavioral and psychological characteristics and movement pattern from his home to crime scene well, he could be quickly arrested. The geographic profiling technique, assuming the relationship between offender s home and crime scene, enables arson investigators to arrest serial offenders and can be widely available in the crime scene investigation. First of all, it is really needed to understand the serial arsonists motives for the purpose of effective profiling. According to the arsonists motives, their behavioral, traveling and target selection patterns are considerably different. Various post-offense behavior can provide arson investigators with very useful clues. Serial arsonists usually commit their offenses at the acquainted locations to them e.g. close to home, residence or working place. It is also found that the most of the arsonists walked to the scene where they committed the offenses and others rode a bicycle. Most set fires no further than one or two miles from their residence. In this study, the previous research results accomplished by Korean, American and Australian will be principally discussed.
