대한제국기 순종황제의 행차와 음악

국문 초록

순종황제의 행차는 정상적인 황제의 외양을 드러내기 위해 다양하게 이행되었다. 그러나 전통적인 행차 동기와 연계된 부분이 미약해 지거나 형식화되거나 변질되는 양상을 띠었다. 특히 태황제의 존재로 인한 덕수궁 문안, 일본 황태자 접대, 순행, 동물원·식물원·박물원 관람을 위한 행차 이력이 순종의 황제 등극 이후에만 새롭게 등장했는데, 일제의 외압이 거세었던 시대 배경과 연계된 것들이어서 주목된다. 순종황제의 행차모습은 고종황제의 어가행렬(御駕行列)과 연계되는 점이 없었다. 신식(新式) 노부(鹵簿)를 마련한다는 명목을 내세워 대한제국(大韓帝國)의 어가행렬의 전통을 단절시키려 했다. 게다가 악대는 아예 노부에서 제외되었다. 다만 순행에 군악대가 노부 외 구성원으로 황제를 수반했다는 점에서만 악대 사용 용례가 나타날 뿐이다. 갑자기 달라진 이색적인 황제 행차 풍경은 사람들에게 황제에 대한 새로운 외경심을 불러일으키지 못했다. 오히려 순종황제의 신식노부는 관광(觀光)거리로 전락해 버렸다. 순종황제의 행차를 신식이라는 명분 하에 고종황제의 어가행렬과 현격하게 차이를 둔 것은 대한제국의 황권을 단절시키기 위한 조치의 일환이었다. 즉 순종황제의 동가(動駕)를 고종황제와 그것과 전혀 다르게 구성함으로써, 완전히 달라진 순종황제의 어가행렬을 통해서는 대한제국 황제의 정통성이 이어지고 있다는 생각을 하기 어렵게 만들려고 했던 것이다. 이로 인해 황실의 행악(行樂)의 전승도 위기상황에 처할 수밖에 없었다.

영문 초록

The procession of Emperor Soon-jong was implemented in various ways to show the appearance of a normal emperor. However, traditional motives of procession became weak, formalized, or corrupted. The history of procession is noteworthy as it is related to the background of the period. Processions for daily greetings for Emperor Gojong in Duksoo Palace(德壽宮), welcoming reception for Japanese crown prince, SoonHang(巡幸), visits to zoos, botanical gardens, and museums reflect the historical background, the strong external pressure from Japan. The procession of Emperor Soon-jong showed no connection with that of his father, Emperor Go-jong. Under the pretext of modernizing nobu(鹵簿, weaponry and tools that were displayed in king’s procession to show the dignity of the king), there was a move to break the traditional royal procession of Korean Empire. In addition, bands were excluded from nobu. Military bands joined royal tours only once in a while. The sudden and unusual scenes of royal procession did not inspire awe in the public. The newly equipped nobu of the royal procession rather degenerated into a mere crowd-pleaser. The composition of Emperor Soon-jong’s procession was significantly different from that of Emperor Go-jong. The entirely new composition made it hard to believe that the legitimacy of emperorship of Korean Empire was continuing. Because of this move, the tradition of haeng-ak(行樂, music played during procession) was also put in danger of extinction.
