민요의 변화에 따른 전승 방향의 재고

국문 초록

민요는 노동이나 의식과 같은 기능의 소멸, 그리고 텔레비전이나 라디오와 같은 매체의 등장으로 점차 사라지고 있다. 민요를 보존, 전승하기 위해 문화재로 지정하여 보호하고 있지만 오히려 공연예술화되고 고착화되는 단점이 발견되고 있다. 또 교통수단의 발달로 인한 지역적 특성의 붕괴와 혼용 양상, 식습관 변화로 인한 한국인의 체형변화와 마이크 사용으로 인한 발성 및 음색의 변화, 기능에 대한 몰이해와 공연용 각색으로 인한 변화 등 다양한 측면에서의 변화들이 감지되고 있다. 이 글에서는 민요의 전승 환경 변화에 따른 음악적 변화들이 어떻게 나타나고 있는지 간단히 정리하고 이들 변화에 어떤 자세로 대처해 나가야 할 것인지 전승 방향을 재고해 보았다. 향토민요는 기록화를 통해 보존 노력을 기울이고 있으나 그 지향이 민요라는 악곡에만 머물러서는 안되며 문화적 배경과 전통 지식, 살아있는 문화로서 민요의 특성을 이해할 수 있도록 입체적인 기록화가 시도되어야 한다. 반면 문화재 지정 민요는 정부의 지원금과 반복되는 공연으로 공연예술화되었으나 이를 부정적으로만 보지 말고 오히려 그러한 상황을 적극 활용할 필요가 있다고 보았다. 문화재 전승자를 자원으로 삼아 더 적극적으로 민요 전승을 활성화해 나가야 한다. 특히 교육적인 측면에서 교육자료로서의 활용, 교육 주체로서의 역할, 체험학습의 제공과 같은 부분들을 담당해줄 인적 자원이 될 수 있을 것이다. 한편 무형문화재 지정 민요가 본래의 민요적 특성을 유지·보전하고 전승하기 어렵다는 점은 또 다른 과제를 남기고 있다. 즉 전문가의 음악이 되어버린 문화재 민요 대신 또 다른 기층 음악이 만들어져야 한다는 점이다. 그리고 기층음악으로서의 민요는 또 다시 즉흥성과 유동성이 중요한 가치가 되어야 한다. 아울러 학문적으로는 민요의 변화에 대응하는 새로운 학문적 접근과 정리가 필요하다.

영문 초록

Folksongs are losing their functions such as labor songs and rituals and they are slowly disappearing due to the emergence of the mass media such as television and radio. in order to preserve and transmit folksongs, folksongs are designated as cultural assets, which, sadly, is only turning folksongs into performance arts and fixing their place. Various changes are noticed due to the development of transportation which is causing the local characteristics to collapse and intermix. Changes in diet are causing changes in Korean body figure, using microphones are causing changes in vocalization and tone, and finally ignorance of functions and dramatization are causing changes in folksongs. This article briefly looks over musical changes caused by the changes in transmission environment of folksongs and examined the transmission direction as to how to adapt to such changes. There are efforts to preserve folksongs through documentation. However, the aim should not be constrained to a type of song, folksongs; rather, there should be an multi-dimensional documentation which can allow the public to understand the characteristics of folksongs as cultural background, traditional knowledge, and living culture. On the other hand, the folksongs which are designated as cultural assets and become performance art through the government’s support fund and repeated performance should capitalize on their status. Especially, in the education aspect, they can provide experiences such as providing education materials, the roles for education agents, and providing field experiences. On the other hand, the folksongs which are designated as cultural assets leave us another task because it is hard to maintain, preserve and transmit the original characteristics of folksongs. in other words, we need another type of basic music beside cultural asset folk songs which are become the music of experts. Folksongs as basic music should have improvisation and flexibility as important values. in addition, there needs to be an academic approach and examination with regard to changes of folksongs.
