The tradition of reading aloud with changes in pitch and duration is a long one, and Seongseo is one of the music genres associated with this tradition. Songseo is understood to be a ‘professional musician’s genre reading aloud with an established rhythm organization and melody flow’ and famous instances such as from 『Gomunjinbo』, and the novels or are considered representative examples of Songseo.
This study examined changes in the concept of Songseo. The results showed that Songseo was used in the sense of ‘reading books’ or ‘sound of reading books’ in a traditional society and it has no conceptual difference with ‘Dokseoseong’ [tune in reading books] which is a type of reading for studying purposes in study rooms. A new kind of concept associated with Songseo referred to as ‘the sound of reading with musicality for other people’s enjoyment’ appeared after professional musicians started the practice of ‘the sound of reading’ through phonographic records or radio broadcasts in the early 20th century.
Songseo began to be distinguished from tune in reading books in the early 20th century. However, Songseo and Dokseoseong shared a common feature in that they all involve the reading of a long passage aloud and have a common rhythm organization in the process of the reading. The results of this study indicated that the tune in reading books and Songseo have common features of rhythm organization such as the Deungsiga [等時價] type where there is a beat to every letter and the Danchang·Changdan[短長·長短] type that have short-long and long-short sounds. An analysis of sound sources of Dokseoseong and Songseo showed that Danchang·Changdan type has been used more frequently than the Deungsiga type and that the Deungsiga type has been used occasionally when reading aloud texts.
in short, Songseo was evolved within a culture of reading aloud. Songseo performed by professional musicians maintained common characteristics with Dokseoseong in study rooms in terms of rhythm organization after the early 20th century. The differences with respect to the professionalism and musicality of performers of Songseo and Dokseoseong are related to melody such as melody flow and Sigimsae, but they share a common basic rhythm organization. Dokseoseong are included within the broader concept of Songseo, and the narrow concept of Songseo should be understood within the contexts of changes in traditional cultures with the appearance of mass media such as phonographic records or radio broadcasts in the early 20th century.
