현대미술에서의 쉘터(Shelter) 공간 연구

국문 초록

본 연구는 조립식 건축 방식과 사물 인터넷 기술이 결합된 ‘스마트 쉘터’가 가까운 미래에 각광받는 주거 방식이 될 것이라는 예측을 전제로 하고, 예술의 차원에서 ‘쉘터’ 개념을 고찰하고자 하였다. 그래서 이를 위해 미국의 미술가 안드레아 지텔의 쉘터 작업을 중점적으로 살펴보았다. 왜냐하면 지텔은 인간의 삶의 방식에 주된 관심을 두고 작업하는 작가이므로 그의 쉘터 작업은 인간의 거주 방식에 대한 고찰일 것이고, 지속적으로 제작된 쉘터 작업들은 일관된 맥락 하에서 어떤 의미를 공유하고 있을 것이라고 생각되었기 때문이다. 이러한 이유에서 지텔의 쉘터 작업을 고찰한 결과, 본 연구는 지텔의 쉘터 작업이 일종의 마이크로 유토피아의 구현이라고 보았다. 이때 유토피아의 구현은 크게 세 가지 방식으로 이루어졌는데, 그것은 첫째, 디자인 유형을 제시하는 유물론적 방식을 통한 자기 규제, 둘째, 가상공간을 설정하여 스스로를 고립시키기, 셋째, 제도의 틈을 발굴하여 임시 공간을 창출하기이다. 연구자는 이러한 작품 개념이 니꼴라 부리요의 관계미학과 관련성이 있다고 보았다. 왜냐하면 마이크로 유토피아의 구현은 관계미학 담론의 핵심 주제와 같기 때문이다. 뿐만 아니라 지텔과 부리요는 둘 다 예술 작품을 사회제도의 틈으로 여기는 공통된 관점을 가졌다. 이를 근거로 본고는 안드레아 지텔의 쉘터 작업에 있어서 관계미학적 특성을 구체화하려 했다. 그리고 쉘터라는 사물이 현대미술이라는 무대에서 하나의 작품으로서 등장했을 때 이를 통해 어떻게 공동체와 개개인에 대한 고찰이 이루어지는지 그 사례를 밝히고자 했다.

영문 초록

This study seeks to investigate the concept of “shelter” in art, premised on the forecast that the “smart shelter”, a combination between the methodology of prefabricated architecture and the Internet of Things, will soon become the popular way of housing. The paper focuses on American artist Andrea Zittel’s shelter works. The logic behind doing so was that as Zittel’s main interest lies in the ways of human life, her shelter works would be a contemplation of human living methodologies, and the constantly produced shelter works would share a certain meaning under a consistent context. Having examined Zittel’s shelter works for such reason, this study concludes that her shelter works are a realization of a sort of micro-utopia. The artist achieves this realization of utopia in three ways: self-regulation through a materialistic means of presenting a design pattern, self-isolation by designating a virtual space, and construction of temporary space by hunting the cracks of the system. Researchers of this study see this conclusion in relation to Relational aesthetics, which is an argument that has been developed by French art critic Nicolas Bourriaud. The reason of the connection between Zittel’s shelter works and Relational aesthetics is that ‘realization of a micro-utopia’ is also the key point of the Relational aesthetics. Furthermore, Zittel and Bourriaud have the same point of view about art, which is that ‘an art work exists as an interstice (or a crack) of the social system.’ Therefore researchers of this study try to make definite the elements of Relational aesthetics in the Zittel’s shelter works, and make specific how people consider community and individuals when a shelter comes into the contemporary art as an art work.
