Glimpsing the Infinite Movement through Literature: The Deleuzian Body without Organs and the Buddhist Emptiness

국문 초록

본 논문은 문학의 역할, 특히 한 문학작품의 결론의 장에서 독자가 무엇을 경험하게 되는가를 들뢰즈(와 거타리)의 초월적 존재론으로 조명해보고, 들뢰즈 이론의 미흡성을 마하야나(대승)불교의 관점으로 보완하는 연구이다. 들뢰즈와 거타리에 의하면 무한한 움직임은 순수하게 되는 과정이다. 그것은 존재론적으로 긍정한다거나 부정한다거나 하는 개념이 생성하고 변하는 과정이 아니며, 항상성, 영구성을 지니고 우리의 생각과 행동을 만들고 있으나 우리가 지각으로 감지할 수는 없다. 즉 들뢰즈의 생성 혹은 되기는 말 하나 하나의 의미에 국한되지 않고 종합적으로 보자면, 지금까지 숭고미라고 지칭된 층을 의미하며, 들뢰즈의 “타자”라는 단어도 이 주체와 객체의 구분이 없는 층을 가리킨다. 이 영역은 작은 분별심(organs)이 없고 진정한 지혜만 있는 영역이다. 거타리와 협력하여 쓴 저서들 보다 들뢰즈가 일찍이 혼자 저술한 책들에 보면 들뢰즈의 뜻이 더 명료해진다. 그러나 들뢰즈의 생성/되기나 기관 없는 신체는 레비나스가 그의 타자의 철학에서 의미하는 윤리학적 중요성은 지니지 않음을 짚은 후, 마하야나 불교가 가장 근본적 의미의 인간임과 윤리성 모두를 지니고 있음을 설명한다. 『금강경』과 특히 『화엄경』이 많이 인용, 논의 되었으며, 선불교에서의 “이뭣고” 화두도 문학작품이 추구하는 바의 논의에서 다루어졌다.

영문 초록

This paper examines the nature and goal of literature and the arts, especially with regard to the ending of a text, from the perspectives of Gilles Deleuze’s transcendental ontology and Mahayana Buddhist philosophy. The central ideas would be Deleuze’s “infinite movement” and the Buddhist philosophy of perfect emptiness. According to Deleuze and Felix Guattari, the infinite movement is the movement of pure becoming. The goal of becoming is to be a body without organs that is carried on with consistency on the non-ontological level. In the Buddhist light, it is staying on the Middle Path which means a process by which the reader lessens and abolishes the power of the ego. The egocentric thought and become one with the all embracing and unconventional, non-identifiable transendence. This essay also shows the vast view of the infinite movement in Avatamsaka Sutra. Then the ending of Hamlet as a supreme example is examined from this viewpoint. Going beyond Deleuze’s thought, which lacks ethical characteristics, and the limit of Levinas’s ethical philosophy, this paper investigates the most profound thought in great Buddhist Sutras such as Diamond Sutra and Avatamsaka Sutra.
