찰스 번스틴의 (반)시학에 대한 연구

국문 초록

이 논문의 목적은 ‘공식적인 시 문화’에서 ‘인정되어 오지 않은 것’과 후기구조주의에 의하여 ‘억압되어온’ 언어의 물질적 성격을 ‘보이고 들리게’하려는 미국 언어 시인인 찰스 번스틴의 ‘(반) 시학’을 연구하는 것이다. 번스틴의 ‘(반)시학’은 ‘공식적인 시 문화’와 ‘억압’에서 인정되어오지 ‘않은’ 것들의 장소를 ‘구축’하려는 ‘(반)공식적인’ 시학이다. 번스틴의 ‘(반)작문하기’는 이러한 ‘않은’을 구축하여 ‘작문하기’와 ‘(반)작문하기’가 종합되지 않은 채 ‘성좌’를 발생시키려는 ‘(반)시학’ 글쓰기방식이다. 번스틴은 ‘않은’을 글자 ‘아닌’ 괄호인 ( )에 넣어서, 양각에서처럼 시각적으로 ‘(반)’이 종합을 향한 변증법의 부정으로서 ‘반’과는 ‘다름’을 보여준다. 또한 ( )는 언어의 물질적 성질이 경험되는 (비)유클리드 공간의 표식이기도하다. 번스틴이 스타인에서 발견한 ‘언어의 (비)사용’이나 자신의 ‘(비)영어’는 ‘다른 비,’ (비)가 ‘않은’을 구축한 예들이다. 이러한 작업을 통하여 번스틴은 ‘작문하기’의 세계와 ‘(반)작문하기의 ‘(비)’의 세계가 나란히 옆에 접하지 않은 채 공존하며 예측 불가능한 ‘성좌’를 발생하게 한다는 것을 보여준다. 번스틴의 ‘다시-거주하기라는 진짜/실재 작업’은 이 성좌를 발생시키는 ‘이 세계’와 ‘(비)’의 세계에 다시-거주하는 것이다. 번스틴은 이 ‘다시-거주하기’ 예는 ‘인정되어오지 않은 것’들과 ‘억압되어온’ 글자와 소리가 보이고 들리는 ‘낭송’에서 실재로 구현/실현된다고 주장한다.

영문 초록

This paper aims to investigate into an American Language Poet, Charles Bernstein’s (anti)poetics which makes visible and audible what has been unacknowledged by the ‘official verse culture’ and materiality of language repressed by poststructuralism. Bernstein’s (anti)poetics is an (un)official poetics which constitutes places for the ‘un’acknowledged things and repressed materiality of language. Along with constitution of places for the ‘un-’ as (op), his ‘com(op)posing’ is an (anti)poetic writing technique which puts ‘posing’ and ‘(op)posing’ side by side without synthesis, leading them to possible constellations. By throwing ‘un-’ into a non-letter type sign ( ) as in relief, he exposes the difference of ‘(anti)’ from ‘anti’ as an antithesis in dialectic. ( ) is a mark that makes visible non-Euclidean space in which sensible experiences occur, as well. (non)s in Stein’s (non)use and his (non)English are examples of a ‘different anti,’ (anti) which enacts what has been ‘un’acknowledged and repressed. Through his (anti)works, Bernstein demonstrates that unpredictable constellations of a world of posing and a world of (op)posing put adjacently without contact may occur. Bernstein’s ‘real work of re-inhabitation’ is a work to dwell in these constellations. Bernstein proposes poetry reading as an enactment of ‘the real work of re-inhabitation’ by making heard and looked the unacknowledged things and repressed materiality of language, its sound and look.
