공교육의 사회변혁능력에 대한 마이클 애플의 분석에 나타나는 문제들–

국문 초록

학교가 가지고 있는 변혁가능성을 논증하는 것은 잘 알려진 마이클 애플의 주요한 이론적 과제다. 그의 이론 속에서 이는 Ideology and curriculum 및 Education and power를 통해 완성된 형태로 제출된 바 있다. 이 두 저작은 네오그람시주의의 정치 및 문화이론, 그리고 비판이론적 국가론을 기반으로 그 논증을 수행한다. 전자는 학교에서의 실천들의 이데올로기적 성격을 드러내는 것을 통해 학교가 이미 저항적 실천의 장(site)이라는 주장의 근거를 제공한다. 후자는 그 저항을 사회변혁을 위한 계획적 투쟁으로 전화시킬 수 있다는 물리적 가능성을 입증해주는 것이다. 자본의 축적구조를 안정화시키며 국가의 정당성을 확보해야 하는 국가기구로서의 학교는 다시 자신의 정당성 역시 확보해야 하는 바, 이 기능들 사이의 모순은 학교에서 계획적 이데올로기 투쟁이 가능한 물리적 조건이 된다. 그러나 애플의 정치적 기획은 자신이 터하고 있는 국가론에 상충되는데, 비판이론적 국가론은 축적과 정당화 간 모순으로 인해 국가를 특정 집단이 이용할 수 없다고 주장하기 때문이다. 이 문제는 애플의 이론구조 속에서 국가론이 차지하는 비중을 고려한다면 매우 중요한 것임에도 불구하고, 현재까지 거의 조명 받지 못했다. 상기한 문제는 학교의 변혁가능성이 애플의 이론 속에서 아직 완결되지 않은 과제임을 증명하는 바, 동시에 교육과 사회의 관계를 규정하는 연구들이 반드시 고려해야 하는 문제의 유형역시 드러내 준다.

영문 초록

It is the well-known principal task of Michael W. Apple to prove the possibility of transformation by school. Apple s proof was submitted by completed forms in Ideology and curriculum and Education and power. He performed a demonstration for that task based on political and culture theory of Neo-Gramscian, and Critical Theory of the state. Political and culture theory of Neo-Gramscian provide a basis for the claim that school is already the site of resistance, through showing a ideological character of practices in school. Critical Theory of the state proves the possibility that the resistance can be transformed into planned struggle to change society. School as the state apparatus, stabilize and legitimate the structure of capital accumulation all together, must secure legitimacy of the state and itself. So contradiction between these functions are physical conditions for transforming the resistance in school. However, Apple s political plan conflicts with that theory of state, because Critical Theory of the state argues that the contradiction makes nobody can use the state. Concerning the weight of theory of the state in Apple s theory, this problem is very important, but has not receive attention seriously. The problem mentioned above show that the task, proving the possibility of transformation by school, is yet unresolved in his theory. At the same time, this also shows the type of problem that researches of relation between education and society are forced
