영문 초록

This study examines regional gasoline demand and efficiency using panel data from 1998 to 2012. The estimated efficiency scores were compared with gasoline intensity widely used for a policy purpose. True fixed effect (TFE) models are employed to control unobserved regional specific effects and inefficiency of gasoline use. The results show several findings. First, estimates of gasoline demand were expected: income elasticity of gasoline demand is 0.347, price elasticity is –1.655, population density elasticity is 0.290, and durable good elasticity is 1.440. Second, gasoline efficiency scores estimated by the TFE were substantially different from the gasoline intensity. Third, efficiency scores in Seoul and most Gwangyeoksi became stall or worsen even though efficiency in other areas improved. The results imply the significance of controlling regional characteristics, efficiency, and the difference between gasoline intensity and efficiency.
