영문 초록

This study tries to reinterpret Korean territorial structure primarily based on urban network approaches. Applying Social Network Analysis (SNA) tools, it focuses on analyses of value-chain networking among top 1,000 conglomerates and their affiliated firms in Korea. Its key analytical concepts cover three dimensions of multi-nuclei, nodality, and size-neutrality. Major findings are as follows. First of all, even though Seoul-centered mono-nucleus structure still does not lose its supremacy, this study also finds that multi-nuclei structure starts to take shape in the non-Capital Region. Secondly, judging from conglomerate business networking, Korean territorial nodality presents the typical rich-get-richer and the poor-get-poor patterns, implying that higher nodality is overly skewed towards a handful of cities including Gangnam in the Capital Region. Nonetheless, several local cities such as Changwon, Pohang, Cheonan, and Gumi occupy higher rankings except the above mentioned cities in the Capital Region. Thirdly, in terms of size-neutrality, this study finds that the traditional local primacy is not in accord with local networking primacy, especially in Chungbuk and Jeonbuk.
