송시열의 춘추사상과 정몽주 추숭의 의의

국문 초록

송시열의 포은 추숭은 남다른 것이었다. 송시열 이전에도 이후에도 조선시대는 건국 초기부터 정몽주를 높이 추숭했다. 이에 조선 전기의 조정과선비들이 정몽주를 추숭해 간 과정을 살펴보고, 송시열이 정몽주를 추숭한의의를 대비하여 송시열의 남다른 정몽주 추숭의 의의를 고찰했다. 조선 초기에는 정몽주의 고려 왕실에 대한 충절(忠節)을 강조하여 추숭했지만, 조선 중기 이후에는 조광조를 기점으로 절의(節義)보다는 이학(理學)의 측면을 더욱 강조하였다. 송시열의 정몽주 추숭은 이러한 이학에의 공을 추숭하는 단계를 한 차원 끌어 올렸다. 송시열은 정몽주의 위대함은 개인적인 절의와 충효의 측면을 넘어서 정몽주가 우리나라 습속을 중화의 습속으로 변화시켜 우리나라 문화 수준을 높인 공이 더 크다고 평가했다. 더욱이 송시열은 정몽주가 주자학을 학문의 조종으로 삼아 우리나라 학문이 주자학 중심으로 형성하게 한 점이 정몽주의 독특한 공이라고 보았다. 송시열의 정몽주추숭은 충효의 절의(節義) 측면을 넘어서 정몽주가 이학(理學)을 밝혀 우리나라가 중화문화를 추구하고 양명학을 억제하며 주자학을 강화했다는 측면을 부각시키는 것이었다. 이이와 김장생의 학통을 이으면서도 그들의 평 가를 넘어서 춘추정신에 입각하여 정몽주가 우리나라에 ‘존주자(尊朱子)양이적(攘夷狄)’을 행한 공로가 그의 가장 중대한 업적이라고 평가한 것이다. 이처럼 송시열이 정몽주를 기리고 칭송하는 핵심 내용은 중화문화 지향,정학(正學: 주자학) 전수 등 우리나라 문화의 고양이라는 측면에 더 큰 의미를 부여하는 것이었다.

영문 초록

The meaning was very special for Song Si-Yeol to respect Jeong Mong-Ju. The time before and after Song Si-Yeol, Chosun dynasty had highly respected Jeong Mong-ju after the foundation of the country. However the meaning of respecting Jeong Mong-Ju was different, from the Court of Chosun in the early Chosun dynasty, lots of Sunbi(Chosun noble man) in the middle Chosun dynasty, and Song Si-Yeol in the late Chosun dynasty. In this paper, we looked into the difference of respecting Jeong Mong-Ju and studied meanings Song Si-Yeol’s respectation to Jeong Mong-Ju. In the early Chosun dynasty, the Court of Chosun respected Jeong Mong-Ju’s loyalty and fidelity to Korea Royal family. In the middle Chosun dynasty, there was a turning point that Cho Kwang-jo emphasized Jeong Mong-Ju who contributed to advance of the study of Li(理) rather than his high loyalty toward Korea royal family. Song Si-Yeol raised the level of respectation to Jeong Mong-Ju. He highly evaluated Jeong Mong-Ju’s contribution to the advancement of study of Li. Song, Si-Yeol evaluated Jeong Mong-Ju’s greatness of enhancing Korean cultural level by changing Korean cultural into Chinese beyond his fidelity and loyalty. Especially, Song, Si-Yeol considered Jeong, Mong-Ju’s exclusive contribution as the teachings of Zhu-Xi core science that Korean science developed on the basis of the teachings of Zhu-Xi. Song Si-Yeol’s respectation to Jeong, Mong-Ju exposed that the aspect of strengthening the teachings of Zhu-Xi. He had developed the study of Li that Korea followed after Great civilization while repressing the teachings of Wang Yang-Ming. Song Si-Yeol evaluated contribution of conducting “to the follwoing after teachings of Zhu-xi” and “To pursuit of the great civilization & to reject the barbarianism” which based on Chun-chu spirit. The core substance of Song, Si-Yeol’s praise to Jeong Mong-Ju is giving more meanings with the aspect of enhance of Korean cultural through the pursuit of the great civilization’ and advancement of the teachings of Zhu-Xi.
