영문 초록

The Growth Pole Strategy is one of the single most prominent strategies of regional development. Since the mid-1950s, many countries used the strategy to promote economic growth in depressed regions. This strategy, however, has been under criticism since the late 1960s, as it was found to be unable to produce economic growth in problem regions, contradictory to the theory. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, the strategy was used in Korea to promote industrial areas, including Ulsan. This paper examines social and economic impacts of industrial growth in Ulsan, and evaluate positive and negative impacts of the Growth Pole Strategy. It concludes that the strategy in Ulsan did have contributed to create economic growth in surrounding areas of Ulsan city as well as the city itself.
