영문 초록

This paper investigates the effects of highways on the marketing firms with market areas in lagging regions which compete with the firms in large metropolitan areas. Based on the spatial economic models, this paper examines the effects of the transport rate on the price, market radius, sales of the marketing firms in the less developed regions. It is demonstrated that under some assumptions the highways may have the unfavorable effects on the marketing firms in the lagging regions. In particular, under the assumption of the linear demand curve Lo¨schian model indicates that the decrease in the transport rate may raise the price and reduce the market areas and sales of the marketing firms in the lagging regions. Also, in the case of Hotelling-Smith model, the same results may arise for the relatively high price or large market radius. However, it is demonstrated that for the relatively small market radius in Hotelling-Smith model and for Greenhut-Ohta model, the effects may be reversed. The decrease in the transport rate may lower the price and increase in the sales quantity. However, in these cases the effect of the transport rate on the market radius is indetermenate. This paper discusses the implications of the analysis and argues that under certain conditions the highways may have the unfavorable effects on the marketing firms and regional economy of the lagging regions.
