국문 초록

분쉬는 1901년 말부터 1905년 초까지 약 3년 5개월 동안 고종 황제의 시의(侍醫)로 일하면서 당시 세계 의술의 선도적 위치에 있던 독일의학을 한국에 전파했던 한국 최초의 독일인 의사였다. 그의 활동은 당시 대한제국이 보건정책과 방역대책을 수립하는데 지대한 영향을 끼쳤으며, 그는 당시 서울에 체류한 의사 가운데 외과 수술에 있어 가장 탁월한 것으로 평가 받기도 했다. 분쉬는 당시 세계 의술의 선도적 위치에 있던 독일의학을 한국에 전파하여 한국 의학 발전에 주춧돌 역할을 한 최초의 독일인 의사였다. 독일의 베링거잉겔하임(Boehringer Ingelheim)은 1990년 대한의학회(Korean Academy of Medical Sciences)와 함께 분쉬 박사의 업적과 한국의학계의 학술적 발전을 도모하고 의학 분야에서 한·독 양국의 우호관계를 더욱 공고히 하기 위해 한국의 의학발전에 기여한 의학자들에게 주는 ‘분쉬의학상(Wunsch Medical Award)’을 제정했다. 분쉬의학상은 국내 최고 권위의 의학상으로 한국 베링거인겔하임과 대한의학회는 엄격한 심사기준에 의해 매년 연구 업적이 뛰어난 의학인 1인을 선정하여 상금, 상패 및 메달을 수여하고 있다. 우리는 그가 남긴 기록을 통하여 구한말 한국의 의료 수준은 물론이고 당시 한국인의 생활상, 한국에 살던 외국인들의 생활상을 상세한 부분까지 관찰할 수 있다. 아울러 그가 남긴 기록은 한국 의학 발달사에도 중요한 자료일 뿐만 아니라 한국 역사학계에도 잘 알려져 있지 않은 것으로, 구한말 대한제국의 실상과 일본, 중국 및 서구 열강과의 외교 실체를 파악하는데 유익한 사료라는 점에서 그 가치가 있다.

영문 초록

Dr. Wunsch is the first German doctor in Korea to serve as the king's physician for Emperor Kojong for 3 years and 5 months from late 1901 to early 1905, as well as spread world-leading German medicine to Korea. His activities have greatly influenced the Korean Empire's formulation of health policies and anti-disease measures. He was also evaluated as the most excellent surgeon among the foreign doctors who were staying in Seoul. Dr. Wunsch was the first German doctor in Korea to introduce the world-leading German medicine to Korea, thereby laying the foundation for the development of Korea's medicine. In 1990, German Boehringer Ingelheim, together with KAMS, established the Wunsch Medical Award for the medical scientists who have contributed to the medical development of South Korea in honor and memory of Dr. Wunsch's achievements, to develop the medical technology of South Korea's medical industry, and to further promote the friendly medical ties between South Korea and Germany. The Wunsch Medical Award is the country's most prestigious medical award. It is presented each year, along with a prize money, plaque, and medal to one medical scientist with excellent achievements and successfully underwent the strict screening procedures of Boehringer Ingelheim Korea and KAMS. The records left by Dr. Wunsch offered a look at not only the late-Joseon's medical levels, but also the details of the Koreans' lifestyles, as well as the foreigners who were residing in Korea. In addition, they are important data not only for Korea's history of medical development, but also for Korea's history academia to which the data are not well known, the reality of the Korean Empire in the late Joseon period, and the reality of its diplomatic ties with Japan, China, and the Western powers.
