제2차 바티칸 공의회 ?사목헌장?. 18항이 언급하듯, 인간은 꺼져가는 육체의 쇠약과 고통에 괴로워할 뿐 아니라 영원한 소멸의 공포에 더더욱 괴로워한다. 죽음 앞에 서 있는 인간이 갖는 두려움은 그리스도인이라고 해서 예외는 아니다. 그리스도인은 죽음을 통하여 예수께 돌아가고 영원한 생명에로 들어가는 것이라 믿지만, 죽음의 공포에서 완전히 자유롭지 않다. 분명 인간에게 있어 사멸성은 피할 수 없는 슬픈 상황이고, 삶에 대한 애착으로 표현되는 죽음의 공포 역시 자연적인 것이다. 하지만 아우구스티누스는 이런 사멸성이란 조건이 인간으로 하여금 자신에 대해 알 수 있게끔 하기에 교육적 효과가 있다고 보았다. 성인은 죽음에 대한 두려움이 인간 마음의 심연에 새겨져 있다는 보편성을 제시하면서, 인간이 이 공포에서 벗어나기 위해 하느님의 지혜를 소유하여 참된 현인, 즉 하느님에 따라 살고 하느님께 복종해야 한다고 주장한다. 이러한 그리스도인의 삶은 세례성사로 시작하여 의로움의 완성에로 향하는 여정이라 할 수 있다. 바로 여기에 이중적 차원의 그리스도인 삶의 모습이 있다. 그리스도인이 이미 세례성사를 통해 은총 안에 살기 시작했지만, 곧 죽음에서 생명에로 넘어갔지만 아직 완전한 자유를 갖지 못하기 때문이다. 오직 그리스도만이 의로운 분이며, 그리스도인은 아직 죄에서 온전한 의인이 아니라는 것이다. 그렇기에 죄에서 완전히 자유롭지 못한 그리스도인은 여전히 연약함의 표현인 죽음의 공포를 가지고 있는 것이다. 아우구스티누스는 베드로와 바오로 그리고 순교자들도 죽음에 대한 공포를 가지고 있었음을 강조한다. 하지만 이들이 죽음의 공포를 극복할 수 있었던 것은 신앙의 전투를 통해서이다. 하느님은 신앙의 투쟁에 그리스도인을 놓으시어 정의의 전투에서 진보하는 이들을 가르치고 단련시키려는 계획을 갖고 있던 것이다. 이러한 신앙의 전투는 참된 경건심으로 표현된다. 그렇기에 순교자들은 믿음과 희망 그리고 사랑이라는 향주삼덕을 통해 실현되는 하느님께 대한 참다운 예배인 경건심을 통해 죽음의 공포를 극복한 것이다. 또한 그리스도의 말과 행동이 순교자들에게 죽음을 두려워하지 않도록 하는 권고와 위로가 되었다. 이러한 의미에서 죽음에 대한 공포는 그리스도인으로 하여금 그리스도에게 도움을 청하도록 하면서 겸손을 가르치는 수업과도 같다고 할 수 있다. 따라서 그리스도인은 죽음의 공포를 지닐 때 그리스도께 자신들의 시선을 고정시키면서 고통스러운 절망의 늪에 빠지지 않도록 해야 한다.

영문 초록

As the Second Vatican Council says, “not only man tormented by pain and by the advancing deterioration of his body, but even more so by a dread of perpetual extinction”(Gaudium et Spes, 18). Christians, who believe the eternal life in Jesus Christ after death, nonetheless are not free from the dread of death. They have a fear in the face of death like any other people. All men and women cannot avoid the sorrowful destiny of mortality, thus it is natural that we have a feeling of dread of death, which is virtually identified with longing for life. St. Augustine demonstrates the pedagogical aspect of man’s own condition of corruptibility which makes him know himself. According to the Saint, all human beings experience a deep anxiety over death in their hearts. This universality of dread of death leads Augustine to insist that man has to possess divine wisdom and to be truly wise to overcome the fear. In other words, we must live according to God and obey Him to assuage the feeling. The Christian life is a journey toward the iustitia perfecta which begins with the Baptism. This reveals the dual dimensions of Christian life: believers, on the one hand, already live in the grace of God through the Baptism and “has crossed over from death to life”(Jn 5:24). On the other hand, they do not have freedom fully yet. Only Christ is perfectly just, while Christians are not utterly free from sin as yet. Because of that they still have the fear of death, which is an expression of human weakness. Augustine stresses that even St. Peter, St. Paul and other martyrs had the anxiety over death. But they overcame it through the struggle for faith. God allows Christians to be involved in that struggle, and educates and strengthens them through the battle. This struggle for faith is nothing other than a genuine piety. Martyrs conquered the dread of death through the piety which is a sincere worship realized by the theological virtues ― faith, hope, and love. And Christ’s words and deeds were such an advice or consolation that made them not to be terrified of death. In this respect, the dread of death can be a lesson which teaches humility to the faithfuls and makes them to plead with Christ. Christians, therefore, when feeling the fear of death, should not to be overwhelmed by the anxiety by keeping their eyes firmly on Christ.
