국문 초록

“구약의 말앜(󰗗אָ󰗡󰗫)과 신약의 앙겔로스(ἄϒϒελος)라는 소고의 목적은 현대 신학에서 더 이상 중심 주제로 다루어지지 않는 천사에 대한 개념을 성서학적 방법론을 통해 재조명하는 데 있다. 사실상 20세기 초까지 교의신학의 한 부분을 담당했던 천사학(Angelology)은 오늘날 신학적 관심의 대상으로부터 멀어졌으나, 천사에 대한 이해의 형성과 그 개념의 변화 과정을 재구성하는 작업은 천사학이라는 기존의 학문적 영역의 관심을 뛰어넘어, 구약신학과 신약신학의 형성과 발전의 틀 안에서 이를 새롭게 조망함으로써 두 신학의 형성 과정의 한 단면을 제시한다는 신학적 의미를 갖는다. 이 소고는 우선 천사학의 일반적 천사 이해를 서론에서 제시하면서, 본론에서는 종교 일반의 입장에서 다양한 문화, 특히 고대 이스라엘의 주변 세계에서 등장하는 여러 천사 개념들의 공통점을 추론해 보았다. 그리고 그 추론을 통해 그와 같은 주변 세계의 천사 개념이 이스라엘의 초기 신관에 미쳤을 영향을 가정하면서, 한편 이스라엘의 신학 사상이 갖는 고유한 천사 이해를 구약성경 전체를 통해 관찰함으로써 이를 통해 구약신학의 대조성과 정체성이 어떻게 드러나는지 주목하였다. 그 결과 구약신학의 중심을 이루는 야훼 사상이 내재적 신관에서 초월적 신관으로, 그리고 다신적 신관에서 유일신적 신관으로 변화-발전함에 따라 천사 개념이 더 활발하게 등장하고 또 사용됨을 알 수 있었다. 구약성경을 지나 신약성경에서 등장하는 천사 개념을 관찰하는 본론의 부분에서는 구약을 통해 점점 활발해졌던 천사 개념이 점차 약해지고 있음을 볼 수 있었는데, 그것은 무엇보다도 그리스도 중심적인 구원론을 통해, 그리고 성령론이라는 새로운 신학적 흐름을 통해 천사가 차지하고 있던 비중이 줄었기 때문이었다. 물론 요한묵시록에서 천사에 대한 언급의 빈도가 높아지고 있으나, 이는 묵시문학이 갖는 문학적 특징과 결부시켜 생각되어야 하며, 요한묵시록 내에서도 천사의 역할은 결코 종말 사건의 주체로서 묘사되는 것은 아니었다. 신약의 구원론적-종말론적 묘사는 성부와 성자 그리고 성령이라는 신적-천상적 주체와 (새 이스라엘이라고 불리는) 그리스도 공동체라는 인간적-지상적 주체의 이중적 구조를 주된 틀로 제시하고 있으며, 따라서 문학적 도구로써의 천사 개념이 갖는 입지는 신약신학의 형성 과정을 통해 점진적으로 축소되었을 것이다.

영문 초록

The main purpose of this article, “Malak(󰗗אָ󰗡󰗫) in Old Testament and Angelos(ἄϒϒελος)in New Testament” is to rethink the concept of “ANGEL” which is not the main theme of theology any more. In fact until the beginning of the 20th century, Angelology used to be an important part of systematic theology, but nowadays it is scarcely mentioned even in theological discourse. Despite the reconstruction of “ANGEL” as a theological concept, it still holds value when it is observed within the frame of historical process according to Old and New Testament Theology. This article begins with the general understanding of “ANGEL” at the basis of the study of religion, focusing on the culture of the ancient near eastern world. From that general basis, the outstanding characters of “ANGEL” in OT are arranged from a theological-historical perspective. As a result, it appears that the change from the immanence to the transcendence, and from the polytheism (or henotheism) to the monotheism caused the increasing interest of “ANGEL” as a theological figure. Continuing the analysis from OT to NT, this article differentiates the concept of “ANGEL” in the Gospels, Pauline letters and Apocalypse. The most remarkable point is that the role of “ANGEL” seems to have weakened gradually during the development of Christology and Soteriology in the 1st and 2nd century of Christian theology. This phenomenon may have been further accelerated with the formation of Pneumatology. This means that the theological role of “ANGEL” has been gradually replaced by that of the Holy Spirit. Surely in the book of Apocalypse, the concept of “ANGEL” has drawn important attention again, but that must be understood under the literary character of Apocalypse. Even in the Apocalypse the angels are not the very subject of parusia at all. The Eschatology of NT, from its beginning, already has dual subjects, Father-Son-Sprit as the heavenly subject and Christian community (called New Israel) as the earthly subject. Thus the importance of “ANGEL” as a literary figure decreased with the progress of NT theology.
