국문 초록

철학적 인간학은 독일 철학자 막스 셸러에 의해 20세기에 정초된 철학의 한 분과라고 말해진다. 일부 철학자들은 아리스토텔레스의 인간학이 영혼의 능력에만 관심을 갖고, 신체적인 측면은 대체로 또는 전적으로 무시한다는 점에서, 그것을 철학적 인간학에 포함시켜서는 안 된다고 비판한다. 이 비판과 관련하여 나는 DA에서 소개된 영혼의 포용성 이론, PA에 함축된 가설적 필요성, 그리고 EN에서 논의된 인간의 행복에 필요한 조건들을 분석하고, 그 비판이 잘못되었음을 보이려고 한다. 이 논문의 두 번째 주제는 21세기의 철학적 인간학에 요구되는 역할이 무엇인가에 대한 것이다. 나는 그것이 인간의 자아, 본질, 또는 본성을 실현하거나 완성하기 위한 길을 인간에게 제시해 주어야 한다고 가정하고, 아리스토텔레스의 인간학에서 그런 요소를 발견할 수 있는가를 질문한다. 지성의 탁월성과 성품의 탁월성 그리고 그것들과 관련한 행복에 대한 아리스토텔레스의 논의를 검토 함으로써, 우리는 그에게 있어서 행복은 일생을 통해 지속되어야 하는 노력이 없이는 성취될 수 없는 것임을 알게 될 것이다. 그뿐만 아니라, 그의 인간학은 자아실현을 위한 실천적인 방법과 내용을 조언해 주며, 따라서 우리는 그것이 그의 시대뿐만 아니라, 우리 시대에도 고찰해 볼 만한 중요한 가치를 갖는다는 결론을 내린다.

영문 초록

Philosophical anthropology is said to be a branch of philosophy established in the 20th century since the German philosopher, Max Scheller(1874~1928). Some philosophers have criticised that Aristotle’s theory of human beings is not to be included in philosophical anthropology because it only focuses on the soul faculty of human beings, but largely, or rather totally, ignores their physical side. In reply to this criticism, I analyse the theory of the comprehensibility of the soul introduced in the DA, the hypothetical necessity implied in the PA, and the conditions necessary for achieving human happiness discussed in the EN, and try to show that the criticism is mistaken. The second topic of this paper is related to the question what kind of role is required for the philosophical anthropology of the 21st century. I assume that it must direct human beings the way to realise or perfect their selves or natures or essences and question whether we can find such an element in Aristotle’s theory of human beings. By examining Aristotle’s discussion of happiness in relation to the excellences of intellect and character, we shall see that in him human happiness cannot be achieved without efforts which should continue throughout one’s lifetime. Furthermore, his theory of human beings advises us practical methods and contents which are necessary for self-realisation and so we conclude that it has significant value which must be considered not only in his time, but also in our time.
