민족의 실체설에 대한 비판적 고찰

국문 초록

이 글은 민족이 실체적인 존재라는 주장을 비판적으로 고찰하는 것이 목적이다. 민족의 실체설은 민족이 공동의 조상에서 유래했다는 혈통과 역사, 언어, 종교, 전통, 관습 등 문화와 같은 본질적 속성을 가지고 있기 때문에 객관적으로 구별된다는 민족의 종족적 개념과 민족이 한국과 같은 경우에서 보듯이 유구한 역사를 가진 존재라는 점에 근거하고 있다. 이러한 실체설을 사회학적 차원과 역사적 차원에서 비판할 수 있다. 민족을 포함한 인간 집단은 고유한 속성이 있어서 다른 집단과 구별되는 것이 아니라 역으로 먼저 주관적이고 자의적인 기준을 설정하고 나서 그 기준으로 인간을 범주화하고 나면 내집단을 선호하고 외집단을 차별하면서 내집단을 동질화하는 작업이 동반하게 된다. 따라서 혈통과 문화는 민족을 구분하는 기준으로 인위적 으로 설정되었지만 이렇게 범주화된 민족은 다른 민족과 차별성을 갖는 속성을 강조하게 되는 것이다. 역사적으로 볼 때 민족은 근대국가와의 밀접한 관계 속에서 등장하고 형성된 근대의 역사적 산물이고 민족국가는 주권의 담지자로 등장한 민족이 국가의 정치적 주체가 되는 국가이다. 민족과 민족국가를 이렇게 파악할 때 민족은 부족이나 종족과 차별성을 갖는 개념이 될 수 있고 민족국가는 고대나 중세의 국가와 차별성이 담보할 수 있는 역사적 개념이 된다.

영문 초록

This article tries to criticize the substantialism of the nation which is based on the ethnic concept of nation and its everlasting existence through the history. According to the ethnic concept of nation, a nation has essential and objective attributes such as consanguinity and culture (history, language, religion, tradition, etc), which enable us to differentiate between nations. And some nations can be said to date back to the Middle Ages and even to the ancient times. This substantialism can be criticized on two perspectives. First, on the sociological perspective, the categorization is always made by artificial and subjective criteria. Once people are categorized in a group, they prefer the members considered as belonging to their own group, while they discriminate the outgroup, followed by movements which homogenize the in-group. Although the criteria such as genealogy and culture that differentiate between nations are artificially set up, a nation categorized in such way puts emphasis on differential attributes considered as innate and essential to it. Second, on the historical perspective, the nation emerged and constructed in modern times in a close relation with the modern state, nation-state in particular based on the nation as a sovereign entity. This perspectives allow us to differentiate the nation from the tribe or the ethnic group, and the nation-state from the ancient or medieval state, and to understand the nation and the nation-state as historical concepts.
