영문 초록

The present study investigates the effect of vocabulary test types on vocabulary achievement. Sixty-two Korean college students participated in the study. Based on the results of a pre-vocabulary test, the participants were divided into two groups. The data for this study were collected from two sets of written tests designed to evaluate the students’ vocabulary, grammar and reading abilities, as well as a questionnaire to identify their self-evaluation on vocabulary ability, their vocabulary learning styles, and their assessment of difficulty by vocabulary test type. The results of the study showed some differences in achievement scores in the mid-term test according to the test types between the groups. However, there was no statistically significant difference in the final achievement test. The self-efficacy and assessment of difficulty did not have any influence on achievement. Vocabulary achievement scores varied with vocabulary learning styles, but were most influenced by grammar and reading abilities. An analysis of the results reveals important points. It is recommended that proper test types are used in measuring the lexical knowledge being evaluated since the achievement scores may vary depending on the test types. Teaching vocabulary study strategies can be an effective way to expand a learner’s lexical knowledge.
