Fun-Fun English is an after-school program that has provided elementary students with literature-based English language instruction. This research examined the impact of the program on students’ performances and interests in learning English and challenges teachers perceive in teaching literature. A qualitative case study method has been adopted, and the data has been collected from teacher interviews, classroom observations, student survey, and work samples. This study found that the program was deemed fun and interesting, enabling students to engage in English as a foreign language. Repetitive patterns in literature and diverse scaffolding strategies were the keys to provide students with language practice opportunities. However, learner differences and creating interesting activities were the major concerns for the teachers. In addition, there was a need to allocate more time for intensive study on phonics and grammar in order for students to learn English more effectively. This study suggests that for developing more effective literature-based program, how to use literature in teaching is considered important as much as literature itself. In addition, more balanced approach of incorporating both implicit and explicit teaching of language forms needs to be adopted in meaningful contexts.
