국문 초록

본 논문은 일제강점기하 경남 마산 출신의 영화감독 강호(姜湖)의 활동을 조명한다. 강호 감독을 소개하려는 이유는 다음과 같다. 먼저 영화사적인 측면에서 살펴보면 1920-30년대에 집중적으로 활동한 카프(KAPF) 소속 영화인들의 작품과 비평활동 등은 한국영화사에 있어 기술적-내용적 측면에서 새로운 전기를 만든 계기가 되기 때문이다. 둘째, 지역문화사의 측면에서 강호 감독을 살펴볼 필요성이 있다. 그동안 국내에는 잘 알려지지 않았지만 경남의 창원에는 1952년부터 미공보원 상남영화제작소(Liberty News)가 설치되어 15년 간 활동하면서 초창기 한국영화계의 인력양성과 기술 습득의 역할을 가능케 한 '한국영화의 메카'였다는 역사적 평가를 받고 있는 배경이 있고, 그리고 마산에서는 1910년 최초의 극장이 설립되는 등, 영화와 관련된 역사가 비교적 오래되었음에도 불구하고 이러한 역사적 사실과 활동인물들에 대한 연구와 평가가 매우 일천하기 때문이다. 특히 강호 감독이 본격적으로 활동한 1920-30년대에 대한 연구는 거의 전무한 실정이다. 그러므로 강호 감독의 작품 및 비평활동 등을 살펴봄으로써 경남지역의 초창기 영화사에 대한 연구 등을 시작할 수 있기 때문이다.

영문 초록

This paper focuses on the activities of Kang Ho, a movie director from Masan, Gyeongsangnam-do, during the Japanese occupation. The reason behind introducing director Kang Ho is as follows. First, in the perspective of movie history, the works and reviews contributed by the members of Korea Artista Proleta Federatio (KAPF), who were extremely active during the 1920s and 30s, triggered a turning point in Korean movie history both technically and content wise. Second, it is necessary to examine director Kang Ho in view of regional culture history. It is not a well-known fact in Korea that US Information Service Sangnam Laboratory (Liberty News) was established in Changwon, Gyeongsangnam-do in 1952, and during its 15 years of operation, provided professional and technical training to the developing Korean movie industry. For its historic role, Gyeongsangnam-do is considered to be the 'Mecca of the Korean movie industry'. Gyeongsangnam-do has a relatively long history related to the movie industry. For example, the first theater opened in Masan in 1910. But unfortunately, research and evaluation of these historic facts and key players are almost non-existent Especially, there is almost no research on the 1920s and 30s, in which director Kang Ho was active. Therefore, examining director Kang Ho's work, reviews, etc. is a good starting point for researching the early stages of Korean movie history in Gyeongsangnam-do.
