국문 초록

개혁개방 이후 중국의 자본주의적 산업화는 외국자본과 다국적기업에 자본, 기술, 생산체계의 상당부분을 의존하고 있으면서도, 여타의 제3세계 개발도상국들과 달리 '종속적 발전'(dependent development)의 경로로 나아가지 않았다. 왜 중국의 자본주의와 경제성장은 종속적 발전의 경로를 회피할 수 있었는가? 이 연구는 중국의 경제발전에 내재된 종속적 발전과 탈종속적 발전의 측면들을 살펴보고, 중국이 탈종속적 발전의 경로로 나아가게 된 원인을 추적하고자 했다. 주요 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 개혁개방 이후 중국의 발전과정은 투자ㆍ생산, 기술도입, 수출ㆍ무역의 측면에서 종속적 발전과 탈종속적 발전이 혼재된 성격을 지니고 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 둘째, 수출 및 무역종속의 측면을 제외한다면 종속적 발전의 내용은 대단히 미약하게 나타나며, 중국의 경제발전이 고도화되면서 탈종속적 발전의 측면들이 확대ㆍ강화되고 있다. 셋째, 중국에서 탈종속적 발전이 지배적인 특성으로 나타나게 된 이유는 내부적으로 중국 발전국가의 성공적 종속관리와 중국경제의 예외성, 외부적으로는 중국유입 해외자본의 성격과 중국의 세계경제 편입타이밍에서 기인하는 것으로 분석되었다. 이러한 연구결과는 개혁개방 이후 중국이 이룩한 고도성장과 탈종속적 발전 모두가 중국만이 지닌 예외적인 조건과 특수한 상황 하에서 가능했음을 시사한다.

영문 초록

While China since 1978 has implemented the capitalist industrialization depending on foreign capital and multinational corporations in terms of investment, production, and technological advance, however, it did not fall into 'dependent development' which other developing countries frequently experienced in industrialization. Why does China avoid the path of dependent development? This study attempts to evaluate the natures of economic development in China, and to identify the factors affecting the post-dependent development of Chinese capitalism. Major findings of this study are as follows. First, the mixed consequences of dependent and post-dependent development were founded in China's capitalist industrialization in regard to investment, technology transfer, and trade. Second, as China's economic growth is deepening, the features of post-dependent development have continuously strengthened and widened. Third, the post-dependent development of Chinese capitalism have resulted from successful dependency management of China's state, distinctive features of Chinese economy, capital inflows from the Greater China and East Asia, and favorable timing of integration to world economy.
