국문 초록

본 연구는 양동마을에서의 문화기술적 연구(ethnography)를 통해 관광으로 인한 전통의 재구성을 내부자적(emic) 관점에서 분석하였다. 세계유산 등재 이후 양동마을 전통의 재구성에 대해 중층 기술하고, 양동마을의 주민들이 관광을 어떻게 받아들이고 있으며 어떠한 주체적 경험을 하고 있는지에 대하여 내부자적 관점에서 심층적인 분석을 시도하였다. 양동마을 주민들은 시대의 흐름을 자연스럽게 수용하면서, 한편으로는 스스로 의지를 가지고 전통의 명맥을 유지?보존하고 있었다. 주민들은 관광현상을 대면하여 어떤 전통요인을 선택적으로 전면화 하고, 어떤 전통요인을 관광객들에게 보이지 않는 후면부에 둘 것인지를 주체적으로 결정하고 있었다. 관광객의 기대와 요구를 인식한 양동마을의 주민은 이에 부응하기 위해 그들의 전통을 재구성하여 관광객에게 제공하고 있었으며 관광객으로 하여금 재구성된 전통을 소비하거나 향유하게 만들고 있었다. 전통의 재구성은 관광객을 대상으로 하는 것처럼 보이지만, 그 이면에는 관광객을 포함한 사회적 반응으로 인해 전통에 대한 주민의 자부심과 정체성이 다시금 강화되는 순기능적 의미가 내재되어 있었다. 즉, 관광객을 대상으로 전통을 선별하고 구성하는 과정에서 양동마을 주민들은 선조들의 전통적인 방식과 양식을 적용하는 등의 엄격한 관리를 통해 그들 고유의 문화를 지키고자 하는 강한 의지를 표현하였다. 그리고 이와 같은 주민의 의지가 양동마을이 세계문화유산으로 등재된 이후 외부의 관심이 증가하면서 더욱 강화되었다는 것이 본 연구에서 강조하는 중요한 시사점이다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to analyze reconstruct of tradition in Yangdong village by tourism from the emic perspective through ethnographic research. The study from emic perspective regarding how Yangdong village"s residents accept tourism in their residence and what independent experience they have in some change of their way of daily lives is needed for substantial understanding of a new phenomenon and some problems they would have by tourism of traditional village. Accordingly this study is leaded by thick description of reconstruct of tradition in Yangdong village, tried doing an in-depth analysis based on the result. The findings indicate that residents live well without resisting the trend of the times; on the other hand all of the residents are willing to keep up and preserve their old traditions and determine which tradition factor they are going to focus more on or less on in the face of tourism phenomenon. In other words they have realized high expectations of tourists, have provided them with reconstructed tradition to meet that and now, tourists are able to enjoy and consume it. Reconstruct of tradition seems to be only for tourists, however, there are some good effects to let them enhance self-esteem and intensify self-identity toward their tradition by reason of social response, including tourists, behind it; This means that they showed a strong will to preserve their own tradition through strict management applied traditions of their ancestors in selecting and reconstructing process for tourists, then this study emphasizes that external interests increased after being listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site allowed them to be highly motivated.
