야스쿠니신사 봉납스모(奉納相撲)의 제의적 고찰

국문 초록

본고에서는 야스쿠니 신사 봉납스모의 제의적 성격을 초혼식(招魂式)과의 관련에서 중점적으로 고찰하고, 여기에 야스쿠니 신사 사쿠라의 상징성이 어떻게 관계하는지를 검토하였다. 이를 통해 현재 춘계예대제에 즈음하여 사쿠라마쓰리와 함께 화려하게 행해지는 봉납스모가 전전 야스쿠니 신사가 ‘본연’의 기능을 하던 시기와의 연속성 속에서 어떠한 문화적 특수성을 내포하는지를 밝히고자 하였다. 야스쿠니 신사 봉납스모의 제의적 성격에서 가장 주목한 것은 초혼식 다음날 펼쳐진 본전 앞 도효이리 의식이다. 전전 봉납스모의 도효이리 의식은 전사자(戰死者) 영혼의 초혼(招魂)관념을 반영한다고 보았다. 야스쿠니 신사의 본전은 전사자의 영혼이 제신으로 모셔진 공간으로 본전에서의 봉납 도효이리를 통해 스모 요코즈나와 마쿠노우치 선수들은 야스쿠니의 영령이 강림하는 군신이자 충신이 된다. 야스쿠니신사의 봉납스모에 제신(祭神)의 성격인 군신․충신을 만들어 내는 것과 동일한 제의적 성격을 내포할 가능성이 크다는 것도 <스모계 -군부 -야스쿠니 신사>의 관계를 통해 확인할 수 있었다. 또한 전전 임시대제 초혼식의 봉납스모는 ‘사쿠라 꽃처럼 진’ 명예로운 죽음을 맞이한 전사자 영혼과 관계한다면, 현재의 봉납스모는 사쿠라마쓰리의 시기에 맞추어 열린다는 점에서 ‘만개한 사쿠라 꽃’인 환생한 전사자 영혼의 상징성을 내포한다. 이러한 점에서 야스쿠니 신사의 봉납스모는 전전과 전후를 관통하는 전사자의 ‘영혼’을 배경에 둔 일본만의 특징적 문화현상이라고 할 수 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

This research study is an inspection with a focus on the relationship between the ritual characteristics of the Yasukuni Shrine Dedication Sumoand the Shōkon Ceremony, and examines how the symbolism of the Yasukuni Shrine Japanese cherry blossom is related. Through this, this research study attempted to show what type of cultural characteristics the fancy Dedication Sumo that was celebrated together with the ‘Sakura Matsuri Festival’ in the current spring time festivals has in relation to the period and continuity where the prewar Yasukuni Shrine served its “true”. This aims to reexamine the Dedication Sumo in the context in which the Yasukuni Shrine showed the original function prior to the war, instead of the present perspective. The special festival at the Yasukuni Shrine is a ritual for the souls of the war dead from individuals’ souls to the deities of the national ritual. This study focused on the ceremony of entrance procession of Sumo wrestlers into the ring (Dohyo-iri) in the main Shrine as part of the ceremony of enshrinement for an analysis of the ritual of the Dedication Sumo. In addition, there is the same ritual in the actual Sumo Arena in the Yasukuni Shrine, too. To interpret this ritually, through the Dohyo-iri ceremony in front of the main Shrine before a Sumo game, the Sumo wrestlers who have become the gods of war hold the same ceremony at the Sumo Arena where intense Sumo games are held. Therefore, it is noted that the Sumo Arena of the Yasukuni Shrine where wild Sumo games are held by the gods of war symbolizes an intense ‘battlefield.’
