데이빗 딕슨의 구속언약의 특징과 그 영향

국문 초록

스코틀랜드 장로교 신학자 딕슨(David Dickson, c.1583-1663)은 구속언약론의 발전사에서 초기에 위치하는 인물이지만, 그 교리의 중요한 요소들을 잘 정립하여 후대에 전수함으로써 개혁주의 구속언약론의 발전에 중요한 공헌을 하였다. 딕슨은 구속언약론을 주석적, 교리적, 논쟁신학적, 실천적 측면에서 두루 발전시켰다. 그의『히브리서주석』,『 사도들의모든서신서주석』,『 마태복음주석』『, 시편주석』등은구속언약교리의성경적근거를잘제시하고있다. 또한, 웨스트민스터 신조 해설집인『구원하는 지식의 요체』(제임스 더럼과 공저)와 중생론을 다룬『거룩한 치료』에서도 구속언약 교리가 잘 부각되고 있 다. 무엇보다딕슨은1638년“총회연설”『, 거룩한치료』『, 사도들의모든서신서 주석』에서 구속언약 교리를 알미니우스파와 대항하기 위해 적극 활용하였다. 딕슨은 구속언약론을 다른 교리들 예를 들어 삼위일체론과 기독론과 잘 조화시켜서 개혁신학을 더욱 풍성하게 했다. 또한 그는 구속언약을 웨스트민스터 신앙고백의 여러 조항들에서 발견해 냄으로써 구속언약론이 개혁주의권내에서 뿌리내리도록 했다. 그리고 딕슨은『거룩한 치료』에서 구속언약을 성도의 삶에 실제적으로 적용함으로써, 성도들이 구원의 확신을 가지면서도 성화의 삶을 잘 가꾸어나가도록 도와주었다. 딕슨의 구속언약론에서 나타나는 위와 같은 다양한 특징들은 향후 구속언약론의 발전에서 중요한 기초석이 되어 그 교리의 역사에 뚜렷한 방향성을 제시하였다.

영문 초록

The Scottish Presbyterian theologian David Dickson (c.1583-1663)contributed very much to the development of the doctrine of the covenant of redemption (i.e., the pactum salutis). Although his doctrine stood in the early stages of its development, it comprised important elements of the doctrine. He formulated the doctrine from exegetical, doctrinal, and elenctic perspectives. Dickson’s commentaries on Hebrews, the New Testament letters, Matthew,and Psalms persuasively offer biblical foundations for the doctrine. The Summe of Saving Knowledge (1649), a companion piece to the Westminster Confession of Faith and a collaborative work with James Durham, clearly sets forth the threefold covenant scheme—the covenant of works, the covenant of redemption, and the covenant of grace. Therapeutica Sacra, which treats the doctrine of regeneration, also presents the doctrine of the covenant of redemption in detail. Dickson’s “Speech to the General Assembly” (1638) endorses the doctrine to refute the errors of Arminianism. In his various works, Dickson harmonized the doctrine of the covenant of redemption with other doctrines such as Trinitology and Christology along with the basic tenets of Reformed theology, and in so doing he developed Reformed theology more deeply. He also found the doctrine of the covenant of redemption in the Westminster Confession of Faith and rooted the doctrine within Reformed circles. Most of all, Dickson practically applied the doctrine in his Therapeutica Sacra to the life of believers to provide them with a vivid dynamic for sanctification as well as a full assurance of salvation. In sum, the above characteristics of Dickson’s doctrine of the covenant of redemption played a very important role for the orientation and development of the doctrine for Reformed theology and life.
