한국계 미국이민자의 자녀교육열망: 문화, 계층, 그리고 인종적 영향

미국에서 다른 이민자 집단과 비교했을 때, 한국계를 포함한 아시아계 이민자 자녀들 사이의 높은 교육 열망과 성취는 잘 알려져 있으며 이를 설명하는 요인으로 부모의 자녀 교육열망이 주목을 받아왔다. 선행연구는 주로 한국계 이민자 부모의 독특한 자녀양육 관행을 주로 문화적 관점으로 설명하여 왔다. 하지만, 부모의 교육배경과 인종적 소수자로서의 지위가 어떻게 이민자 부모들의 문화와 상호작용하여 교육열망을 형성하는지에 대해서는 알려져 있지 않다. 한국계 이민자 성인자녀 59명과의 심층인터뷰 데이터를 이용하여, 본 연구는 이민자 부모의 자녀교육열망이 부모의 교육배경에 따라 어떻게 달라지며 한국적 양육문화와 인종적 소수자로서의 주변적 지위는 어떻게 교육배경과 상호작용하여 서로 다른 교육열망을 형성하는지를 조사하였다. 연구결과, 고학력 배경을 지닌 한국계 부모들의 양육방식은, 상대적으로 풍부한 교육적 자원과 사회적 주변성의 불균형으로 인한, 자녀의 교육과 성공에 대한 피상적 열망으로 특징 지워진다. 이러한 부모의 기대는 교포 공동체 내의 경쟁에 의해 강화되는 경향을 보인다. 이와 대조적으로 저학력 배경의 한국계 이민자는 고학력 배경의 이민자에 비해 자녀에 대한 낮은 열망을 가지고 있다. 이들은 교육의 중요성을 강조하지만 교육 자본의 부족과 불안한 경제상황은 자녀들이 높은 열망을 갖도록 양육시키기에는 일정한 한계를 지니고 있다. 연구결과는 한국계 이민자들의 자녀양육 관행이 단순히 모국에서 습득한 문화적 가치관에 의해서만 결정되는 것이 아니라 이들의 교육적 배경과 미국사회에서의 사회적 위치에 영향을 받는다는 점을 시사한다.

영문 초록

Asian immigrants in the US, compared to other ethnic counterparts, are known to have higher educational aspirations for their children. Prior literature often ascribes their educational success to the culture-specific childrearing practices among Asian immigrants. However, little is known about how the parents’ educational backgrounds and their minority status interact with their culture to shape their educational aspiration. Using the in-depth interview data with 59 grown children of Korean immigrants, this study examines how the parental socialization practices differ by the parents’ educational backgrounds and how each of them is differently shaped by being Korean and being a minority. Findings reveal that the educational aspiration for children among highly-educated Korean immigrant parents are characterized by an abstract expectation for their children, partly due to the imbalance between relatively rich educational resources and sociocultural marginality. The parents’ abstract expectation is facilitated by the competitive comparison within the Korean ethnic community. By contrast, the less-educated Korean parents have lower aspiration for children compared to the highly-educated counterparts. They also stress the importance of education but their deficiency in educational capital and unstable economic situations prevent them from socializing their children to have high aspirations. The findings suggest that the childrearing practices among Korean immigrants are not just determined by their cultural values, but shaped by a variety of factors including sociocultural marginality, Korean culture, and class.
