『三國遺事』에서의 猒髑 순교 설화 수용에 대한 검토

국문 초록

법흥왕대 염촉의 순교 이후 그에 대한 추모사업이 지속되었는데, 이러한 과정 속에서 다양한 전승 자료가 출현하였다. 그런데 여기서 주목되는 것은 각 전승 자료가 본질적으로는 ‘염촉의 순교를 통해서 법흥왕의 불교 공인이 이루어졌다’는 주제를 전달하면서도 법흥왕의 역할과 의미에 대한 기술에 있어서는 차이를 보이고 있다는 점이다. 이는 추모와 전승의 주체가 갖고 있는 각각의 입장 차이에서 기인된 것이라 할 수 있는데, 본고에서는 바로 이러한 점에 주목하여 고려 후기까지 염촉 설화의 전승 양상을 살피고 이에 대한『삼국유사』의 수용태도를 검토하였다. 그 결과『계림잡전』을 인용한『삼국사기』나『해동고승전』에서의 법흥왕은 유약한 군주로서 묘사되고 있는데 비해,「촉향분례불결사문」을 주인용한『삼국유사』에서는 권위 있고 능동적인 군주로 기술되고 있음을 살필 수 있었다. 더욱이 일연은 법흥왕을 아도와 같은 聖人의 위치에서 이해하고 있는데, 이는 한국 불교의 수용과 전개에 있어서 국왕의 역할을 강조하고자 하는 의도가 반영된 것으로 ‘원종흥법염촉멸신’조목이 포함된「흥법」편의 중심 기조와도 연관성을 갖는다.

영문 초록

The martyrdom of Yomchok that took place during the reign of King Bop-hung was an important event that led to the recognition of Buddhism propagation at the national level. The projects of commemorating and honoring his martyrdom thus continued on, which trend was even inherited by Goryeo. This paper presents a review of Yomchok's martyrdom episodes found in the historical books of Goryeo. What is important here is that there are differences in the depiction of roles of King Bop-hung and Yomchok, situations, and backgrounds among the historical books while they all essentially reported that "Yomchok's martyrdom resulted in the official recognition of Buddhism in Shilla" through Yomchok's episodes. While Samguksagi and Haedong Kosung Chon described King Bop-hung as a passive figure and Yomchok as a leading figure in the Yomchok episodes, Samgukyusa depicted both of them as leading characters and called them "saints." Those differences in description derive from the publication purposes of historical books. While Samguksagi and Haedong Kosung Chon did not place importance on the roles of king in the growth and development of Buddhism, Samgukyusa, which was published to heighten the authority of king, highly appreciated the roles and meanings of King Bop-hung in the official recognition of Buddhism in Shilla.
