국문 초록

본 연구는 노년기의 근로지위변화가 건강에 주는 효과가 성별에 따라 다를 수 있다는 점에 주목하여, 한국복지패널 1-8차년도(2005년에서 2012년) 자료를 활용하여 근로지위변화와 건강 간 관계를 성별에 따라 분석하였다. 노인 건강지표로는 우울증상과 주관적 건강상태를 사용하였으며, 분석방법은 이중차이 기법 (Difference-in-Difference, DID) 모델을 사용하였다. 한국의 65세 이상의 남성노인의 고용률은 OECD 국가 중 2위이며, 노인빈곤율은 OECD 국가 중 1위이다. 이러한 상황에서 노년기의 근로지위변화가 건강에 주는 영향은 중요하게 다뤄져야 할 사회 이슈 중 하나이다. 분석 결과 남성노인에서 ‘비근로에서 근로로 이동’한 집단의 경우 ‘지속적으로 비근로’인 집단에 비해서 우울 수준이 통계적으로 낮게 나타났다. 주관적 건강상태와의 관계는 보다 명확한데, ‘근로에서 비근로 상태’로 이동할 경우 주관적 건강상태가 악화되었고, ‘비근로에서 근로상태’로 이동할 경우 주관적 건강상태는 향상되었으며, 이는 개인의 비관찰된 특성을 통제한 후에도 일관되게 나타났다. 하지만 여성노인의 경우는 근로지위 변화가 우울수준과 주관적 건강상태에 미치는 영향력이 통계적으로 유의미하지 않았다

영문 초록

We examine how transitions of labour market status affect health conditions such as depressive symptoms and self-reported health status among aged over 65 using Difference in Difference(DID). We use data from the Korea Welfare Panel Study over the period 2005 through 2012 and ran analyses for both sexes separately. Korea has the second highest employment rate for males aged over 65 years old, ranking behind only Mexico and Iceland among the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries. At the same time, Korea has the highest poverty rate among people aged over 65 years old among the OECD countries. In this context, study of the impact of transitions of labour market status on health of older adults is important issue in the context of Korean society. Our results show that the depressive symptoms of those aged over 65 years old who transit from joblessness to employment is significantly lower than those who are continually non-employed for men, but the association is not confirmed for women. With respect to self-reported health status, those who became employed improved in self-reported health status while those who became non-employed worsened in their health status, both groups in comparison to those who are continually non-employed for male older adults. Transition of labour status did not affect the health status of aged women significantly.
