This study researches the translation methods of Korean manuscripts and the variations in these transcription processes, through contrasting the Doumseok edition written by the Chinese, the Kyujangkak copy and the Nakseonjae copy that are Korean manuscripts of Yohawjeon. The results are as follows: 1. The Nakseonjae copy is verified as a transcription of the Gyujanggak copy by this study. Also, this study presumes that the Gyujanggak copy was translated and copied in 1886(Gojong 23), from the date(Byeongsool. Mar.5) recorded in the Gyujanggak copy, and that the translators are presumed to be the Leejongtae, and so on, who were literary men engaged in the translation of Chinese novels delivered to the order of Gojong at that time. 2. According to results from examining the Gyujanggak copy's translation method, although it is translated verbatim from the original on the whole, sometimes contractions and omissions appear. Because there are also many mistranslations, the meaning of many sentences is vague. Also, vocabulary translation by way of changing Chinese for Korean words written in Chinese characters is frequent, and words written in Chinese characters and Chinese borrowed words appear frequently. So, there was a lot of unfamiliar vocabulary and expressions for readers of Choseon. Also, there are many expressions that do not fit into Korean language rules. Particularly, these expressions do not keep entirely the respect language rules, which are important for the special quality of the Korean language. 3. The Nakseonjae copy and the Gyujanggak copy can be compared in structure and expression. The Gyujanggak copy was translated into 14 volumes and 42 chapters, keeping the Doeumseok edition's structure just as it is. The Nakseonjae copy was translated into 22 volumes and 40 chapters without changing the Gyujanggak copy's contents, and it altered greatly the structure. The chapter titles used in the Gyujanggak copy were kept as is, but two chapter titles were erased. So, the placement of the Gyujanggak chapter titles are off by 21 positions. Therefore, these chapters are in a state that the title of the chapter loses its function, because the contents and the title are discordant. The Nakseonjae copy was rarely changed, because it directly transcribed the Kyujanggak copy in expression. Only, during the transcript process, because the Nakseonjae copy added and embellished correction and change everywhere to improve the imperfect translation state of the Gyujanggak copy, there are many small variations of expression compared with the Gyujanggak copy. But, the changes did not seriously alter the events or the outline itself. In the meantime, the Gyujanggak copy and the Nakseonjae copy are sources that can be utilized for actual proof to explain variation phenomena that appear in the transcription process of old Korean novel manuscripts, in that they have been proven to be related for both script and transcript editions.
