미국 대학을 졸업한 조기유학 경험자의 진로탐색 경험 및 진로탐색에 영향을 미치는 요인

국문 초록

본 연구의 목적은 미국 대학을 졸업한 조기유학 경험자의 진로탐색 경험을 알아보고, 조기유학 경험자의 진로탐색 경험에 영향을 미치는 요인을 탐색하는 것이다. 연구대상은 초, 중, 고등학교에서 조기유학을 하고 미국 대학을 졸업한 24세-28세 조기유학 경험자 11명으로, 심층 면접을 통해 이들의 대학 졸업 후 진로탐색 경험에 대하여 탐색하였다. 자료분석은 질적연구 방법론 가운데 근거이론 방법(Strauss & Corbin, 1998; Cobin & Strauss, 2008)을 적용하여 조기유학 경험자의 진로탐색 경험에 대한 실체적 이론을 제시하였다. 본 연구결과 조기유학 경험자들의 핵심경험은 '이중성(duality) 속에 나다움을 지향함'이었고, 하위범주는 '유학 통해 좋아하는 것에 집중함', '대학졸업을 위해 고군분투함', '아무도 없다는 외로움', '부모의 유학지원에 대한 부담감', '신분문제', '취업기대와 현실의 괴리감', '유학의 강점과 무관한 업무', '미국과 한국의 기업문화 차이', '미국과 한국의 문화, 가치 차이', '조기유학 경험자에 대한 한국사회의 시선', '두 문화 모두에서 소수인', '나를 잃을까봐 두려움', '삶의 옵션 속에 정체성 재정립'으로 나타났다. '이중성 속에 나다움을 지향함' 중심현상에 영향을 미치는 요인은 개인적 차원에서 '친구, 선배의 도움', '부모의 지지', '신앙', '진로정보', '학교 카운슬러, 교수의 조언' 의 범주가 도출되었고, 사회문화적 차원에서 '한국사회의 조기유학에 대한 시각'. '한국사회의 집단주의', '한국의 글로벌 능력 신장', '미국사회의 개인주의' 범주가 도출되었다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to investigate career exploration experiences of U.S. college graduates with early study abroad experiences and determine factors that influence early study abroad students' career exploration experiences. Participants of this study were U.S. college graduates between the ages of 24 and 28, who had studied abroad during their elementary, middle, or high school years. This study conducted in-depth interviews with 11 participants to examine their post-college career exploration experiences. This study developed a substantial theory on career exploration experiences of early study abroad students by applying grounded theory (Strauss & Corbin, 1998), a form of qualitative research method, for data analysis. The result of this study determined "establish one's own characteristics amid duality" as a central phenomenon, and "focus on area of interest obtained by studying abroad," "strive for college graduation," "feel loneliness," "pressure associated with parents' support for study abroad," "immigration status," "difference between job expectations and employment reality," "do business that is irrelevant to advantages of studying abroad," "difference corporate cultures between Korea and the United States," "cultural and value variations between Korea and the United States," "Korea's social view on people with early study abroad experiences," "minority status in both cultures," "fear of lose of selfhood," and "reestablishment of self-identity by making life choices" as subcategories. "Help from friends and alumni," "parents' support," "religious belief," "career information," and "advice from school counselors and professors" are categories that influence the central phenomenon, "establish one's own characteristics amid duality," on a personal level. In a social context, "Korea's social view on early studying abroad," "Korea's collectivism," and "the United States' individualism" are categorized factors that influence the central phenomenon.
