박세당 詩에 나타난 '눈물'의 의미

국문 초록

西溪 朴世堂(1629~1703)은 17ㆍ18세기의 사상가ㆍ정치가이면서 문학가이다. 이 시기의 조선사회는 양란의 영향으로 정치, 경제, 사회는 물론 사상적으로도 동요되고 있었다. 그런 속에서 박세당은 부모형제와 두 아내, 두 아들을 잃는 참담한 경험을 하였고, 8년여의 관직생활에서 신념과 현실의 괴리로 괴로워했다. 그리고 冬至使 書狀官으로 燕行에 참여하여 명ㆍ청의 교체를 피부로 느꼈으며, 귀국한 다음해에는 모든 것을 등지고 석천동에 들어가 삼십여 년 동안 농경과 저술활동을 하며 보냈다. 개인적 사정은 물론 국내적ㆍ국제적 여건이 평온하지 못했던 박세당의 삶은 그의 시에 그대로 투영되어 있는데, 특히 '눈물'이 많이 발견되는 것도 이와 무관하지 않은 것으로 보인다. 서계의 시에서 '눈물'이 등장하는 작품은 556제 중에서 90여 편 있다. 사용된 시어도 淚ㆍ涕ㆍ泣ㆍ血ㆍ潸ㆍ啼ㆍ嗚ㆍ嗷ㆍ哭ㆍ慟 등으로 다양하다. 작품 속에서 '눈물'들은 개인적 정서뿐만 아니라 교유했던 인물들과의 추억, 시국에 대한 근심 등을 담아서 함께 흐르고 있다. 이러한 눈물 흘리기는 결국 세계에 대한 자아(화자이자 작자인 박세당)의 대응방식으로, 박세당의 의지에서 비롯되었을 것으로 보인다. 따라서 본고에서는 박세당의 시 작품에서 '눈물'이 의미하는 것이 무엇인지 찾아보고자 하였다. 그 의미를 추적하는 과정으로 '눈물'이 나타나는 양상을 함께 살펴보았다. 눈물은 외부의 다양한 자극에 의해서 나오기도 하지만 감정이 격해진 상태에서도 분비된다. 본고에서 주목한 눈물은 외부의 자극에 의한 생리적 눈물이 아니라 인간 내면의 감정이 격해져서 자연스럽게 흘러내리는 눈물이다. 박지원에 의하면, 울음은 인간이 느끼는 모든 감정인 七情에 의해서 분출된다. 즉 喜, 怒, 哀, 樂, 愛, 惡, 欲이 모두 눈물을 일으키는 감정요소인 것이다. 서계 박세당은 그의 시에서 무려 114회 이상의 눈물을 흘리며 七情을 충실히 담아내고 있다. 그의 시에 나타난 눈물들을 살펴보면, 시간이나 공간의 분리에서 야기된 슬픔을 노래한 시가 압도적으로 많다. 다음으로 주변인들의 고통 뒤에 숨겨진 부당한 현실에 대한 분노와 미움의 시, 조화로운 세계를 꿈꾸는 욕망의 시가 있으며 기쁨과 즐거움이 녹아들어 있는 시는 2편에 불과하다. 이렇듯 복잡다양한 감정들이 작품 속에서 눈물로 흘러내리는데, 이것은 서계의 체험이 혹독했던 것도 그 이유가 될 수 있지만, 시로써 道를 실현하려는 대신 꾸밈없는 情을 표현하고자 한 그의 작시 의도가 크게 작용한 것으로 보인다. 또 기쁨과 즐거움의 눈물보다 슬픔, 분노, 미움, 욕망의 눈물이 많은 것은 서계가 현실세계를 조화롭지 못한 것으로 인식함에서 연유하는 것으로 보인다. 이 같은 서계의 '눈물'은 사무친 감정의 체증을 해소하여 정화할 수 있게 하고, 울분에 차 있던 그를 가만히 있게 하며, 무갈등의 일상을 지향하는 의미를 지닌다. 좋은 사람들과 시간적ㆍ공간적 거리를 두지 않고 살 수 있는 곳, 정당한 요구가 합리적으로 받아들여지는 곳, 그리고 자신과 세계가 조화를 이루며 살 수 있는 곳에 대한 바람이 서계의 눈물에 녹아서 함께 흐른 것이다. 이렇듯 서계의 시는 눈물을 흘림으로써 외부로부터 받은 상처를 치유하며 서계가 오롯이 그로 살아갈 수 있게 해주었을 것이다.

영문 초록

Seo-Gye Park Se-dang (1629~1703) is a thinker, politician and literary man of 17~18 centruy. Joseon society of the period had been shaken in terms of politically, economically, socially, as well as ideologically under the influence of two wars. In such a circumstance, Park Se-Dang had terrible experiences losing parents and brothers, two wives and two sons and had suffered from the gap between belief and reality during 8 years of the government office life. He felt the transition of the Ming dynasty to the Qing dynasty through the skin while participating in Yeon-Haeng(燕行) as a Dong-Ji-Sa Seo-Jang-Gwan(冬至使 書狀官) and since next year of returning, he had lived apart from the world and entered to Seok-Chun-Dong and spent his time in farming and writing for 30 years. While Park Se-dang's life where personal circumstances, as well as domestic and international environment were never calm is directly projected in his poetry, the fact that especially 'tears' is found a lot seems to be related to this. In Seo-Gye's poetry, there are many more 90 pieces where 'tear's appeared among 556 works. Poetic words used are various such as Lu(淚)ㆍChe(涕)ㆍEub(泣)ㆍHyeol(血)ㆍSan(潸)ㆍJe(啼)ㆍO(嗚)ㆍO(嗷)ㆍGog(哭)ㆍTong(慟), etc. 'Tears' in the works flows together containing not only personal emotions but also memories of the people associated, the anxiety about the current situation, etc. While shedding tears is ultimately the way of responding from self (Park Se-dang who is a speaker and also author) toward the world, it seems it has been derived from the will of Park Se-dang. Therefore, this paper was trying to find what the 'tears' means in Park Se-dang's poetry. The pattern in which 'tears' appears was investigated together as the process of tracking the meaning. While tears can come out by a variety of external stimuli, it also can be secreted even in the state when the emotion runs high. The tears noted in this paper is the tears flowing down naturally by the high emotion inside of human, not the physiological tears by external stimuli. According to Park Ji-won, crying is ejected by seven feelings(七情) that are all emotions that human can feel. So, all of Hui(喜), No(怒), Ae(哀), Lag(樂), Ae(愛), O(惡) and Yog(欲) are emotional factors causing tears. Se-Gye Park Se-dang is fully putting out seven feelings(七情) while shedding tears as many as more than 114 times in his poems. When looking at the tears appeared in his poetry, the poetry singing sadness resulting from the separation of time or space is overwhelmingly a lot. Then, there is the poem of the anger and hatred for the unjust reality hidden behind the suffering of people around and the poem of desire dreaming of a harmonious world but there are only 2 poems where the joy and pleasure are blended. While a variety of complex emotions are flowing as tears in the works, a harsh experience of Seo-Gye could be a reason of it, but his versification intention which tried to express unaffected Jeong(情) instead of realizing Do(道) with the poetry seems to have significant effects. Also, the reason that the tears of sadness, anger, hatred and desire were seen more than the tears of joy and pleasure seems to be coming from Seo-Gye's recognition of the world as not harmonized. Such tears of Seo-Gye has a meaning that allows relieving the congestion of the feelings deep inside, cleaning up it, having him still and directing the daily life with no conflict. The desire about where he can live with good people without temporal and spatial distance, where the fair demands are accepted reasonably and where he can live in harmony with the world is melted in Seo-Gye's tears and flows together. As such, it's believed that the poetry of Seo-Gye would heal the wounds received from the external by shedding tears and allow Seo-Gye to live his life on his way.
