국문 초록

본 논문은 1930-40년대까지 전개된 사회적 리얼리즘Social Realism과 추상표현주의Abstract Expressionism 사이의 이행 과정을 논제로 삼는다. (40년대 미술의) 미학적 우수성이나 탁월성으로 이행의 원인을 돌리며, (30년대) 인민전선기의 문화를 온통 스탈린주의류로 추정하는 그간의 모더니즘 비평방식에 반립해, 1930-40년대 사이의 사회역사적 요인 분석을 통해 그 변모 과정의 원인을 밝혀보려 쓰였다. 그 요인은 일체의 ‘사회적 가치’와는 조우할 일 없는 ‘미적 가치에의 경배’인 형식주의 미학의 초현실적-비역사적 미학이념과 열렬한 보수주의로서의 미국적 합의 사고consensus theory의 정치·역사관이었다. 이처럼 궁극적으로 미국 모더니즘 미술로의 이행은 (미적)가치value와 역사적 담론historical narrative이 서로 내재적으로 결합되어 있었던 결과였음을 밝히고 있다.

영문 초록

This study addresses the transitional process from Social Realism to Abstract Expressionism as its topic. It consists of the work of restoring the 1930s, which disappeared before our eyes through exclusion and deletion, and the work of unveiling the perceptional structure of the 1940s as social hegemony of America that chose Abstract Expressionism. The replacement of Social Realism with Abstract Expressionism is anchored to a way of thinking derived from new aspects of American late capitalism and America’s long tradition of individualism in Consensus Theory. These may be chronicled as the victory of formalist aesthetic idea as “worship for aesthetic value” and the victory of imperialist consensus theory, but these are too insufficient and weak to be an authentic idea to be maintained for long years.
